Battle Cards are items introduced in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, being the spiritual successor the Badge system in the previous games. They are used in battle and have a plethora of effects: examples include temporarily boosting a certain stat, healing the party, reducing a specific group of enemy's Level, dealing damage to a specific group of enemies and boosting EXP and Coins earned at the end of the battle.

Battle Cards are items introduced in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam. They replace the Badges from previous games, and can be used in battle to power up the Mario bros, power down enemies or implement various other special effects and abilities. Unlike the badges in earlier games, multiple cards with the same effect can be used in a single battle, with the effects being multiplied based on the number of cards used (so a 25% extra EXP card and a 50% extra EXP card can be used together to get 75% more EXP than normal).
Battle Cards are introduced in Twinsy Tropics's dungeon. After freeing a Paper Goomba, the player receives their first cards. After that, previously unavaible Card Shops will officially open, and they can be also obtained by clearing Lakitu Centre quests or sometimes retrieved from defeated enemies.

In this game, the initial set of cards are given to the Mario bros by the Paper Goomba they free from the Twinsy Tropics dungeon. After this, they can then be purchased from the card shop in any of the game's towns or unlocked by completing mini games and Lakitu Centre quests.  Cards are set up in the Battle Cards menu, with up to ten cards being assigned to a set and the player being able to switch between three sets at any point in time.
In the menu, the player can set up a deck from his Battle Card collection from the Battle Card option. A deck can only contain 10 cards: no more, no less. Only one deck can be set up at a time. From this menu, the player can also clear its deck, restore it to the last setting, or make one randomly.

Once at least one set of Battle Cards is set up, then up to three cards will be present in the deck in battle. Their effects can be used by spending Star Points, which are gained by pulling off normal, Bros and Trio Attacks in battle.  Good ratings (like Great or Excellent) add up to three Star Points to the counter, lower ratings add between half a point and one point to the counter. Any cards used are then later replaced by later ones in the deck when the next turn comes around.
In battle
Once a deck is set up, it will show up in the Touch Screen in battle. Their effects can be used in exchange of Star Points: up to 20 of them can be obtained at once (30 with a Rank-Up Bonus). Each card uses a different amount of Star Points, from just one to about a dozen of them. Star Points can be obtained by succesfully attacking enemies and obtaining ranks like Great and Excellent: however, ordinary attacks can only add up to about a third of a Star Point, while Bros. Attacks and Trio Attacks can grant up to 3 Star Points at once.refneeded If a player doesn't want to use a card, they can turn it over to discard it. The status of a player's deck carries over battles.

If the deck runs out of cards, then no new ones will be drawn until the remaining cards are used, at which point the deck is reshuffled and the cycle repeats anew.
Up to three cards can be dealt at once. If three of them are present at once, no more will come out, and the player has to use one or turn it over. When all 10 cards are used, they are shuffled again and the cycle repeats.

Other kinds of Battle Cards
In addition to the normal cards you can buy in shops, there are also shiny Battle Cards that are dropped by Shiny Paper enemies found at random across the world.  These are more powerful versions of the normal cards, which cost half the amount of Star Points to use in battle.

amiibo Cards
Shiny Battle Cards
As well as standard battle cards, special amiibo Cards can also be used the same way. These are created by taking a special Level 1 or Level 2 amiibo Card and then scanning an amiibo into the game, which will create a special card whose design and effect relates to the amiibo character.  Level 1 amiibo Cards and Level 2 amiibo Cards can either be purchased from a Toad inside any Card shop, or found after defeating certain enemies in battle.
Shiny Battle Cards are a variation of ordinary Battle Cards. They are rarely dropped by enemies and are never sold in Card Shops. Their effects are similar to an ordinary Battle Card, however cost half of its Star Points (rounded up) and have a slightly stronger effect at the same time.

Usage by Enemies
Character Cards
Character Cards are a system similar to Battle Cards, but work with amiibos. To get started, one must first get a ? Card. ? Cards come in two variations: LV 1 ? Cards and LV 2 ? Cards. The second type is rarer but produces stronger cards. They are rarely dropped by enemies or alternatively bought for 200 and 800 Coins, respectively. From the menu, the player can make a random Character Card of the ? Card's level by scanning an amiibo.

Battle Cards are also used by certain bosses in the game, with Larry and Ludwig using their own set in their boss battles in Twinsy Tropics and Neo Bowser Castle.  They have their own Star Points (referred to as Dark Star Points in game) which can be gained by hurting the Mario bros in battle. Some of these effects including shrinking the party down, reducing their attack power or defence and hitting them for 180 damage.
Two variations of them exist. The first is Duo Character Cards. If the game alerts the player they can make one, they have to scan a different amiibo (no data will be written on it) and the card will be obtained. They are more powerful than more card and feature an artwork of two characters at once.

Sparkle Character Cards are also stronger version of Character Cards, but are made differently. If the player has two amiibos and both of them have a certain card, they can both be scanned to make a card with similar, but amplified effect, and register it on both amiibos. They are shiny too, making them similar to Shiny Battle Cards. However, the player can only make one per day.
