The X-Nauts come in 3 different ranks
X-Nauts are known in a pre-release English localization of ''Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door'' as '''Boomer Gangers'''.<ref>{{cite|author=Skawo|date=July 19, 2011|url=youtu.be/VDMEQrZ92IA?t=25m47s|title=<nowiki>[TCRF]</nowiki> Paper Mario 2 - Entire Demo Footage|publisher=YouTube|accessdate=April 8, 2012}}</ref>
*'''X-Naut Troopers''' are the lesser X-Nauts, also the weakest. These types of X-Nauts are field troops and the lowest of Grodus' underlings. When led by high-ranking commanders, such as Lord Crump, they can use more attacks.
*'''Elite X-Nauts''' are high-ranking soldier X-Nauts and of course, the strongest X-Nauts. Unlike the Trooper X-Naut or the PhD, his type of X-Naut wears a red-and-black uniform with a white X to signify their rank. Judging by their rank, they are usually sent on special missions. One of their usual tasks include guarding their [[X-Naut Fortress|Headquarters]] on [[the Moon]].
*'''X-Naut PhDs''' are X-Nauts that wear a lab coats and blue uniforms. As the name implies, the X-Naut PhD is an expert X-Naut Scientist and it is usually responsible for building the inventions the other X-Nauts use for their plans, such as the [[Magnus Von Grapple Robots]]. It attacks by throwing chemicals at Mario and his team. They also created the species called [[Yux]].

Also, some are encountered in the [[X-Naut Fortress]], including [[X-Naut PhD]]s and [[Elite X-Naut]]s. At least four X-Nauts aside from Crump remain by the end of the game, and are shown in the ending sequence: A regular X-Naut soldier, an X-Naut PhD, and two Elite X-Nauts.

X-Naut, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

X-Nauts are soldiers of the eponymous organization that work for Sir Grodus and Lord Crump in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and its remake. They are short and individually weak, but rush to defend their leader, Lord Crump, if he is threatened; a large army of X-Nauts (exceeding any count of X-Nauts seen where they are standard enemies) is often summoned by Lord Crump. It is unknown what is behind their uniform, as they do not show their true appearance, just like a Shy Guy.

X-Nauts are known in a pre-release English localization of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door as Boomer Gangers.[1]

History[edit]

Paper Mario series[edit]

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[edit]

An X-Naut uniform.

In battle, X-Nauts attack by charging into Mario or jumping on top of him. They can also use potions to heal each other or make themselves huge; increasing their Attack. They also appear in Bowser's platforming levels, where they attack by charging at Bowser if they spot him.

Several X-Nauts are encountered in the Great Tree as they and Crump search for the Emerald Star. The remaining X-Nauts are forced to retreat once Crump is defeated. Also, some are encountered in the X-Naut Fortress, including X-Naut PhDs and Elite X-Nauts. At least four X-Nauts aside from Crump remain by the end of the game, and are shown in the ending sequence: A regular X-Naut soldier, an X-Naut PhD, and two Elite X-Nauts.

X-Nauts also appear as members of the Audience during some battles. They typically throw rocks at Mario if the battle drags for too long or if Mario receives contact damage and/or his attack deals no damage.

Super Paper Mario[edit]

According to Super Paper Mario, X-Nauts have been featured in two sci-fi TV shows: Starship X-Naut and The Grodus Chronicles (the latter of which is only known to have featured one X-Naut whose lover had dumped him). There have been many seasons of Starship X-Naut, and the show is a favorite of geeks such as Francis. Apparently, he favors people who would dump somebody over a conversation about the propulsion system of the X-Nauts' spaceship on the show.

A Sammer Guy goes by the name of Laughing X-Naut.

Nintendo Monopoly[edit]

An X-Naut makes a cameo appearance on the Nintendo Monopoly board.

Super Mario Run[edit]

Two X-Nauts had a minor cameo in Super Mario Run (ver. 3.2.0) on promotional artwork in the game during its celebration of the release of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (Nintendo Switch), though their presence on the in-game alert for the event was their only appearance in the game.
