Final Fantasy, a highly successful modular RPG series, is the flagship franchise of Square Enix. Many of Square Enix's contributions to the Super Mario franchise contain references to, and characters from, Final Fantasy. Square's Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is heavily influenced by Final Fantasy tonally and mechanically, which can be particularly seen with secret boss Culex, a parody of Final Fantasy bosses of the time. Much later, various generic Final Fantasy characters and enemies appeared in Mario Hoops 3-on-3 and Mario Sports Mix, while Cloud Strife of Final Fantasy VII fame was the first "named" Final Fantasy character to appear alongside Super Mario characters, in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U.
