"Circus" Theme
Hello, and what a Moe-rvelous Mario Moe-ker 2 announcement we had today! I noticed on the wiki page that one of the confirmed themes is listed as being "Circus", presumably from the scene with the Banzai Bills at 1:10 (in the official Nintendo video). I believe that this is a little bit Moe-sleading. The correct theme title, I think, would be "Night", for Moe-ltiple reasons. Reason one is that the "circus" theme is not a recurring theme in many Mario games (really only Super Mario 3D World). However, night is a recurring theme which was not included in the original Super Mario Maker. I believe that the circus aesthetic was simply applied to the "Night" theme, as the two often coexisted in levels such as Spiky Spike Bridge, Footlight Lane, and, obviously, World Bowser itself. Reason two is that at 1:14 in the same video, the "Night" theme is shown in the New Super Mario Bros. U style, with no circus in sight. Reason three, which may tie in to reason two, is that at 0:43 in the video, the winter theme is shown in the New Super Mario Bros. U style as well... but strangely it takes place during the daytime, per New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Why would they change it... unless they wanted to differentiate the "Night" theme from the winter theme? After all, the constellations at 1:14 are taken right from the sky of World 4 of NSMBU.
Hello, and what a Moe-rvelous Mario Moe-ker 2 announcement we had today! Obviously, the trailer hasn't even been out a day, and so Moe-ch is still left in conjecture. None of this is proven. Plus, there are a few things which might make me reconsider. The platforms and conveyor belt at 1:10 do look awfully "circus-y", and there were some Moe outwardly "night-y" themes in Super Mario 3D World, like in Puffprod Peaks or Super Galaxy. Maybe this is a new "Sky" theme outside of the airships, or "Fog", or maybe even each game style will have one unique theme! There's no way of knowing! But as of now, a better guess seems to be the "Night" theme. Thus, I have made that edit. Anyone who wishes to dispute may, but these are my reasons. Thanks for reading,MOSES THE MOE-EYE --Moe-Eye (talk) 21:13, 14 February 2019 (EST)

:I would actually say the theme falls under the Airship category. These stages were always in the sky, after all, and additionally, if one analyzes the footage closely, there's a slight bob to the camera completely unrelated to Mario's movement. This camera behavior is an infamous behavior for the Airship theme in the original game, so it seems much more likely to fall under that category. --MissingNumbers (talk) 13:54, 6 March 2019 (EST)

::You might be right, as a Moe-tter of fact. Although it would seem quite odd. The theme in question looks quite like a circus, or maybe a train level, and that would be an odd choice to approximate for the airship theme. After all, most of the other themes would carry over quite well between game styles - underground to underground, jungle to jungle, desert to desert, and so on... but wouldn't it be a little strange to have it so that the airship theme looked like an airship in all of the first four styles, and then, randomly, like a strange circus loco-Moe-tive in the last? Making an airship shape in the other styles and then translating it to Super Mario 3D World style would throw everything off! Why not use a tank level theme or maybe even refurbish the airship theme from Super Mario 3D Land? Anyway, the airship theme is still there, as per the Super Mario Bros.-style clip in the trailer, and there Moe-st certainly is a night theme, as per my above paragraph, so the point seems to be moot for now. I guess we'll just have to wait until the game comes out! But I appreciate the feedback - I see your point, and it very well might be the case. Thanks for the critique - and, yeah, good eye with the camera! Until June, MOSES THE MOE-EYE --Moe-Eye (talk) 21:51, April 20, 2019 (EDT)

I'm not sure if the current filling in of the chart is a good idea. SMM didn't typically have the same palettes to the originals (though admittedly SMB and SMB3's palettes irl depended on TV specifications), so there's nothing proving so far that the graphics in this game will have the same palettes as in SMM, potentially leaving them inaccurate after launch. == Alleged 3D World reference ==
The references section lists 3D World as a reference for the recolour of the Galoombas; however, this seems to be based more on their artwork at the time.

Goomball.jpg|Artwork of a Goomba, from Super Mario World
SMW Goomba Sprite.gif|Super Mario World sprite

I believe the darker colour on their head, as well as their green coloured shoes, originate from the official artwork, which was also the basis of their appearance in 3D World; as such, it is not a reference to 3D World as much as simply a more correct sprite. == Fictionalized Course Makers in Story Mode ==
While it's obvious that the course makers in the story mode (e.g., Amateur Meteorologist, Celebrity MC, and so forth) aren't real people or existing Mario characters, and were named specifically for this game, there are three of them that strike out to me: A Certain Mage, Father of Name Withheld, and Name Withheld by Request. A Certain Mage's course descriptions always begin with "Kee hee hee!", which is an evident component of Kamek's speech pattern; Father of Name Withheld's course descriptions begin and end with "Gwa ha ha!", pointing all fingers at Bowser; taking this into account, Name Withheld by Request just has to be Bowser Jr., whom even describes their course, Wobbly Seesaw Castle, as being created from "watching their dad create an evil dungeon." Clearly, Kamek, Bowser, and Bowser Jr. also create courses for the player to play in the story mode. That's not even the problem here. The true dilemma is: Where do I mention said information? Whose article(s) does this pertain to? Does this count as trivia? Someone, help me. MarioManiac1981 (talk) 13:13, July 11, 2019
:This is probably best mentioned in the characters' respective pages. So, on Bowser's page, in the SMM2 section, you can add a note about how he appears to be Father of Name Withheld based on their speech pattern. == Course Uploads and Medals ==
*I know that by default, a player can upload up to 32 courses, but does anyone know if acquiring medals can increase a player's upload limit or not? 08:52, July 12, 2019 (EDT)
:First of all, there aren't medals (at least as they were in the first game), and second, no, I haven't heard of anyone expanding that limit. JoeRunner (talk and stuff) 20:24, July 14, 2019 (EDT)
::So it's probably safe to assume that the upload limit can't be increased? That sure sounds like a downgrade when compared to the first Super Mario Maker. 17:07, July 15, 2019 (EDT)
:::Very sadly and unfortunately, it does look like it's safe to assume that. Maybe if we're lucky there'll be a patch, but for now, no. JoeRunner (talk and stuff) 20:21, July 15, 2019 (EDT)
::::Whelp, I called it. Nintendo has released a patch, so now you can upload 64 courses. It's still capped on that, but they're still planning to expand the limit another time. == Toads in Story Mode ==
I'm kinda confused here. It's clear that the Chief is Toadette, but the other Toads are uncertain; somehow, the Yellow Toad in Super Mario Maker 2 is linked to this lazy dude. Although both Yellow Toads display similar tendencies, is it best to assume that they're one and the same? And what about the other Toads? Are they generic, or are they also associated with the Toad Brigade? The Taskmaster is also another mystery: he's a Red Toad dressed in a blue vest, which is the Toad's defining trait; should we just assume the Taskmaster is explicitly Toad, or should we reference him in Toad's "Possible appearances" section? If the Taskmaster is clearly unrelated to Toad, is there enough information that warrants his own article? Someone enlighten me. MarioManiac1981 (talk) 21:52, July 13, 2019 (EST)
:It's hard to say, I think it would depend on the Japanese name of Taskmaster. Toadette's "Chief" JP name explicitly mentions her own name, so potentially if the JP name were to be "Taskmaster Toad", that could be concrete enough to call him the Toad. For the other Toads, the link to the Brigade is less clear-cut and I would argue that they're unrelated, considering they lack the distinct details (Blue Toad's glasses, Red Toad being Captain Toad) that have been consistent ever since. It may be that the Blue Toad is Blue Toad (character), distinct from the Hint Toad from the Brigade. For Green Toad/Banktoad, well, it's arbitrary since he has used a pickaxe before anyway. MarioComix (talk) 05:33, July 14, 2019 (EDT)
::So, the Yellow Toad is still very likely to be the same one from the Toad Brigade? MarioManiac1981 (talk) 12:35, July 14, 2019 (EST)
:::As far as I know, only the playable blue Toad is explicitly identified as "Toad" within the game, but given that the playable characters are likely just a reference to the New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe cast of characters (sans yellow) and the Super Mario 3D World Toad has been identified as "Blue Kinopio" at least once, I'd be interested to know if Story Mode's Blue Toad and the playable Toad share the same model data or how they're referred to internally by the developers since that's probably the closest we can gather to sort this out. There's a small problem with the controls section: the page doesn't mention that (in the default control setting for playing levels) the "A" button makes Mario [or the character] Jump and "X" makes him/her Attack (or Dash/Grabbing Objects) along with "B" and "Y", respectively. I feel like the section talking about the nighttime Ground theme effects is too large and might even be missing more than we think. Do you think we should just make a separate column in the course elements table that talks about changes in the Nighttime ground theme to that element and if there isn't any, they can just be labeled N/A? Anyone on board with this? PrPro03 (talk) 08:25, April 21, 2020 (EDT)

Don't see this mentioned. The SMB2 mushroom will match your jumps in the night ground theme, hopping into the air whenever you jump. Wariobwario (talk) 07:48, April 23, 2020 (EDT)

The "names in other languages" section for Ninji Speedruns is lacking a few languages. For example, it's called "Contre-la-montre des Ninjis" ("Ninjis' Time Trial") in French. NokiDoki
:I guess you can wait until you're autoconfirmed, but you can specify the others. 20:13, September 1, 2020 (EDT)
Added NOA Spanish names for the Ninji Speedruns mode as well as each of its levels. I will go through later and check to see if the NOE translations differ.

Create a page for Ground (block)
SettledTPP
green
So, here me out. Super Mario Maker series has brought us pages for Slopes and even Semisolid Platforms. The long awaited names for objects that have existed since the dawn of time. A notable addition to that collection is the Ground tile, which can also sometimes appear with background elements when placed. There is generally no reason not to cover it. The problem is, as noted by Archivist Toadette,
:"I think they're referring to the actual ground tiles from the editor. Not sure what to say, though, since that could potentially open up a can of worms to include every time natural ground appears in a game...unless, of course, we limit it to Super Mario Maker and Super Mario Maker 2."
So why not do just that. Create a page about Ground tiles in the Super Mario Maker series, and exclude everything else. We know what is considered Ground, the game clearly tells us what Ground tiles are. Trying to fit in content from past games into Semisolid Platform has proven difficult with its own edge cases, Ground will no doubt be even more problematic.
I propose three options:
# Ground receives its own page, only covering the tiles from the Super Mario Maker series and nothing else.
# Ground recieves its own page, only covering the tiles from the Super Mario Maker series with one exception: comparisons to tiles from past games are acceptable, as long as the tile has the same texture as the one from SMM. Example: it's OK to mention how Ground tiles in Super Mario Bros. act as bricks, rather than as indestructible blocks, because they have the same appearance in SMM. This option would imply Ground blocks' first appearance is in 1985.
# No change is made.

Comparisons are fine
#Spectrogram Per proposal.
#Killer Moth Per proposal. Your reasoning makes sense and I am honestly surprised that there isn't a page yet for this.
#Camwood777 - If we have articles covering things as seemingly trivial as those decorative horsetail-like "trees" from SMB1, just because there happens to be an actual Horsetail item in TTYD and SPM and someone evidently figured they might as well catalog those, when those plants serve strictly as decoration in SMB1 and can't even be interacted with... Yeah, having an article for the Ground as it appears in Super Mario Maker and making notes as to where each of the tilesets came from isn't really too much of a stretch, especially since the ground tiles are probably a lot more impactful overall. It's a named thing in the Mario universe with its own distinct properties and differences across different games (and in Mario Maker's case, game styles, therefore this just makes sense. Though, we might need to move Ground over to something like Ground (theme), and make the article be Ground (block) or Ground (tile).

Comments
I don't see what's inherently wrong with option two, but I'm waiting to see if there's other input first. I do think that, should the proposal pass, "Ground" should be the name of the article, and the current Ground article should be moved to "Ground (level)". Apparently Ground tiles in Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars level editor are also called "Ground". Spectrogram (talk) 08:22, April 4, 2023 (EDT)
