Count Bleck, also known by his real name, Lord Blumiere, is an evil count and the central antagonist of Super Paper Mario. During the game, he summons the Chaos Heart by forcefully marrying Princess Peach to Bowser and uses it to open The Void, which has the power to destroy all dimensions if not stopped. He also leads a troop of minions, with its most powerful members including Nastasia, O'Chunks, Mimi, Mr. L, and Dimentio, the last of whom ultimately betrays Bleck and steals the Chaos Heart for his own plans. However, after being reunited with his love, Lady Timpani, Count Bleck changes his ways and destroys the Chaos Heart, which assists Mario and his party in saving all worlds.

Count Bleck wears a white top hat and coat, and is usually shrouded in a cape with a gradient of white at its top fading to blue at the bottom. The inside of the cape is dark blue and starry, similar to the background texture of Outer Space. When he opens this cape during the cutscene in Bowser's Castle, a unique design is shown depicting the pattern used in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, atop the pedestal in the room with The Thousand-Year Door when Mario presents a Crystal Star. He also wears a large red brooch similar to Princess Peach's blue jewel, white gloves (despite having no arms), and wields a brown scepter topped with a blue jewel. On his left eye is a monocle, and his eyes and mouth are both a glowing red color. However, both his eyes and mouth become light blue when he is defeated, and remain that way until the Pure Hearts are restored.

His name, "Bleck", is normally used as onomatopoeia for disgust, but can also be interpreted as a corruption of "Black", referring to darkness (his Japanese name is a play on the French word for "black", noir.) His real name is likely a portmanteau of blue, referring to his color, and lumière, the French term for light and a reference to his status as a member of the Tribe of Darkness.

History

Background

Prior to the events of the game, Count Bleck went by the name Blumiere and was a member of the Tribe of Darkness, a group that had broken off from the Ancients after stealing the Dark Prognosticus in an ultimately misguided attempt to prevent its powers from being abused. One day, Bleck was found injured at the base of a cliff by a human girl, Timpani, and nursed back to health. Despite his father's warnings to stay away from humans, Blumiere became captured by her kindness toward him, sneaking out of his castle frequently to meet with her, and the pair eventually fell in love.

After learning his father had threatened Timpani and realizing their love could not survive there, Blumiere proposed to her. Before they could be married, his father abducted and banished the bride from their dimension, wiping her memory and cursing her to wander through worlds until the day she died, out of fear that her marriage to his son would dilute the blood of the tribe. Upon learning of Timpani's disappearance, Blumiere traveled through dimensions searching for her, unaware that she had been found barely alive by Merlon, a descendant of the Ancients living in Flipside, and turned into a Pixl known as Tippi in order to save her. It is implied by one of Carson's stories that he met Nastasia at some point during his search - after freeing a bat from a trap, he witnessed her transform into a woman and swear allegiance to him out of love.

Blumiere eventually returned home convinced that his love was gone forever. Believing life and existence to be meaningless without her, he stole the Dark Prognosticus against the wishes and pleas of his father, used its prophetic power to destroy his dimension, and decided to do the same to every world. Blumiere took the alias of Count Bleck and, along with his new assistant, moved to a new castle in a world of darkness, eventually being joined by the three beings who would become his major minions: Mimi, a shapeshifter; O'Chunks, a warrior and failed army general; and Dimentio, a mysterious magician jester.

Count Bleck forces the marriage upon Peach and Bowser to create the Chaos Heart.

Eventually, Count Bleck puts his plans into action, targeting the Mushroom Kingdom. Armed with the prophecy's knowledge that the wedding of a princess and a monster will call forth the Chaos Heart, Bleck abducts Princess Peach and Bowser, along with Luigi and the entire Koopa Troop, and forcibly weds the former two, forming the Chaos Heart. Bleck then uses the Chaos Heart to rip open the Void. Due to a disturbance during the ceremony, Luigi, Bowser, the Koopa Troop, and Peach are scattered across the castle. To confront this problem, Bleck sends Nastasia, with her brainwashing powers, to force members of the Koopa Troop to join his cause and his other minions to various dimensions in an attempt to hinder Mario's progress toward collecting the Pure Hearts.

After Mario defeats all three minions and reunites with Peach and Bowser, the count begins seeing him as more than just a mere annoyance. Bleck turns to the Dark Prognosticus and learns that a "man in green" is the determining factor in whether the prophecy of destruction will come to pass. He then orders Nastasia to brainwash Luigi into Mr. L and sets him on the heroes; however, Mr. L is defeated like Bleck's other minions. Angered by his multiple failures to stop them thus far, Bleck confronts them in person in Sammer's Kingdom. After an argument ensues with Tippi over his motives and the value of all worlds, Count Bleck begins to suspect that she may be his lost love; however, he ultimately convinces himself that Timpani still living is impossible and continues his plans.

Count Bleck's true image as a tragic figure is revealed just as Dimentio steals the Chaos Heart.

After the four heroes defeat Bonechill and obtain the final Pure Heart from the Overthere, Bleck orders his minions to take their positions throughout the castle, to try and defeat them when they arrive. It is at this point that Dimentio reveals to Bleck Tippi's mentioning of the name "Blumiere" - confirming, as Bleck had tried to dismiss earlier, that Tippi was indeed Timpani. Knowing that he is too far along in his plans to stop the Chaos Heart's destruction, however, Bleck ignores Nastasia's urges to call off the Void, secretly hoping that Mario, Peach, Bowser, and Luigi will be capable of defeating him and saving all worlds.

By the time Mario and Tippi reach the inner sanctum of Castle Bleck, the three other heroes had seemingly been lost during their battles with three of Bleck's minions. Bleck and Tippi once again argue before he sends Nastasia away and engages Mario in battle. The count is initially immune to all attacks due to the Chaos Heart, but the arrival of Bowser, Peach, and Luigi grants the Pure Hearts the power to negate the barrier, and, despite the great power from the Chaos Heart, Bleck is eventually defeated by them. Against Tippi's wishes, Bleck insists that the heroes end his game before the Void destroys all worlds.

Before anyone can fulfill Bleck's wish, Dimentio appears and attacks the count; the blow is taken by Nastasia, who is seemingly mortally wounded. Dimentio then takes control of the Chaos Heart from the badly weakened Bleck, planning to use it to create a new world in his image once the old ones are gone. Before he merges with the newly-brainwashed Luigi and the Chaos Heart, Dimentio banishes Bleck, Tippi, and Nastasia to Dimension D. They are united with O'Chunks and Mimi, whose love for Bleck restores the Pure Hearts sufficiently to weaken Super Dimentio and allow Mario and his allies to strike him down. Before his death, Dimentio manages to leave behind a "shadow" of his power, according to Bleck, to ensure all worlds will end as revenge for his death. Aware of the urgency of the situation, Count Bleck returns everyone to the chapel where the Chaos Heart was born, and he and Tippi exchange vows and wed each other; the true love between them supercharges the Pure Hearts, uniting them into the Purity Heart and reverses the prophecy of destruction.

The fate of the couple after the wedding is never completely disclosed. Bleck claims that using their love to stop the Void would cause both of them to "cease to exist", yet both Merlon and a revived Nastasia voice their beliefs that the count is living happily together with Timpani. This idea is given proof by a post-credits scene showing the count's silhouette standing near that of a woman, implied to be Tippi's human form, in a paradise world, supposedly the one he had promised they would one day find.

Count Bleck appears in volume 37 and volume 38 of Super Mario-kun, during the story arc based on Super Paper Mario. His role here mirrors his role in the game.

Dr. Mario-kun

Count Bleck appears in Episode 57, Episode 58, and Episode 59 of the Dr. Mario-kun manga. In the final story arc of the manga, Count Bleck creates The Dimensional Virus which messes with alternate realities. Mr. L also appears in this story arc.

Count Bleck is a unique villain in the Mario franchise as his motives are mostly based on sadness. His actions are born from love and how he handles the loss of it. Regardless, Bleck at first seems to be a basic villain with no feelings who wishes to end all worlds due to the power given by Dark Prognosticus. As the story progresses, his sympathetic traits are revealed and reasons are given to his actions.

Prior to his meeting with Timpani, Bleck was known to be extremely kind and cherished all life and the universe itself. When he met Timpani, he fell in love and was extremely caring and devoted to her. This came to a tragic end when his father sent Timpani away on an endless walk through other dimensions to die. The loss of Timpani made Bleck vengeful towards the world. Bleck wanted to destroy the universe, because he thought that life was meaningless without Timpani.

This turned Bleck into a villain who seeks the destruction of all worlds. Count Bleck's defining trait is his nihilism and believes that, due to the presumed loss of Timpani, all life is completely worthless. Bleck showed how vengeful he had become immediately after his transformation into a villain by wiping out his own dimension. Bleck has hatred against all worlds and seeks to destroy them as he saw them as the things that took his love from him. When Tippi and Nastasia try to convince him otherwise, Bleck continues to think this way until his defeat.

However, in spite of his insistence that Blumiere was dead, Bleck still has some redeeming traits even before learning of Timpani's survival. When he teleports to Bowser's Castle revealing he had captured Princess Peach, he bows and "politely" introduces himself. Bleck also seemed to be very likable, as all his henchmen has a strong bond with him (with the possible exception being Dimentio). During the Prologue, Mimi states being with the count is her idea of a perfect world and Bleck says he will make his minions' dreams come true. He gives Mimi a gift of power during the events of Chapter 2 and his minions happily take their missions to stop the Heroes of Light. Their bonds are shown when Nastasia takes a hit for him and when the Pure Hearts are revives by Bleck, his minions, and Tippi. Count Bleck constantly refers to himself in the third person and deviates from this trait when he is alone and after he is beaten.

The story starts with Bleck wanting nothing more than the destruction of the entire universe, but gradually shows him to be more humane and remorseful of what he has become. By the end of the story, Bleck is shown to be a very caring and loving person, who only did his evil deeds out of his love for Tippi by avenging her supposed death. In the end, it was Timpani who made him realize the error of his ways, and they both saved the universe together. His love for Tippi is what made him evil, but it is also what redeemed him.

Powers and abilities

In addition to being able to use the Dark Prognosticus, Count Bleck has many other magical powers granted by the Chaos Heart that aid him in and out of combat. His most obvious and frequently used power is his ability to freely float without any hindrance to gravity. This power is particularly important due to his lack of visible legs. He also often shows his ability to teleport at will by "flipping", along with the Dark Prognosticus which always teleports at his side. Also, he can use the Chaos Heart's power to shield him from any harm. He also has his own unique sound whenever he flips.

In combat, Count Bleck uses his scepter to conjure globs of dark magic and hurl them at Mario and other foes. These globs are unique amongst projectile attacks in that nothing can block them, including Peach's parasol and Barry. The only way to avoid them is to use Slim, who causes the player to become invisible and intangible. He can also summon a huge vortex of dark energy that sucks up his enemies. Count Bleck can temporarily slow the flow of time as well, similar to the Slow status effect. Finally, he can speed himself in a way similar to using a Speed Flower and simply ram into his opponent, damaging them. His shadow blast attack does 3 damage, his Void move does 8 damage and the player takes 2 damage when walking into the Count. Although he seems incapable to flip in 3D, his globs are in 3D, and they can damage Mario also if he is in the third dimension.

Beyond his magical talents, Count Bleck demonstrates a high intelligence, a compelling physical and conversational presence and a quality of character that can earn undying loyalty from his followers and friends. On the whole, Bleck is charismatic and can easily sway individuals into his service, as seen with Bowser at the beginning of the game, while his servant Nastasia's hard mind control powers cover all other cases.
