A Ptooie in Super Mario Advance 4.

Ptooies are a type of Piranha Plant that have the ability to walk, although some of them are stationed in pipes. These plants have appeared in Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Princess Peach.

A Ptooie will can be identified by balancing a spiked ball over its mouth, which it will blow upwards every few seconds to harm travelers that try to jump over the plant creature. The ball will then fall back down to the Ptooie, who will go back to balancing it.

As with standard Piranha Plants, Ptooies can be destroyed with fireballs, hammers or Koopa Shells.

Ptooies made a few appearances in The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, where they would always attack Mario and/or his friends on sight. Unlike in the game, where they were limited to shooting a single spiked ball into the air, Ptooies could shoot a whole barrage of spiked balls in any direction.

Interestingly enough, Ptooies on the show were capable of speaking in the episode "Never Koop a Koopa", despite the fact that most members of the Piranha Plant family never speak at all.

Trivia

  • The name "Ptooie" is derived from eponymous onomatopoeia for spitting, likely in reference to their ability to balance maces with their mouths.
