Isle Delfino is a tropical paradise island and vacational resort inhabited by Piantas, Nokis, Yoshis, Sunflower Kids, and Tanookis. Alongside the smaller Pinna Island, it looks like a dolphin, as indicated by its name, which means "dolphin" in Italian, and is a direct reference to the GameCube's preproduction codename, Project Dolphin. Isle Delfino is the main setting of Super Mario Sunshine, and has since reappeared in many spin-offs, including the Mario Kart series.

History

Super Mario Sunshine

Mario, Peach, Toadsworth and some Toads take a trip to Isle Delfino in Super Mario Sunshine. However, the island had been covered in graffiti by the mysterious Shadow Mario, who the people think is Mario. With the help of the water pack F.L.U.D.D., Mario is forced to get rid of all the paint on the island and clear his name by defeating the imposter that has been causing trouble. Shadow Mario turns out to be Bowser Jr., who soon kidnaps Peach, but after Mario defeats him and his father, Bowser, life on the island returns to normal and Mario, Peach and their friends enjoy the rest of their stay on Isle Delfino.

Mario Kart series

Isle Delfino has appeared in three of the Mario Kart games with new courses and stages based on it.

In Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, a course named Peach Beach was introduced, which took place on the shore of Isle Delfino. After the player completed the Grand Prix, the award ceremony was held there. Mario Kart DS featured a new course called Delfino Square, which takes place in autumn instead of the usual tropical weather. In Mario Kart Wii, both these courses returned in the Retro cups, along with a new battle stage called Delfino Pier, which likely takes place in the docking area of Delfino Plaza. A new track named Coconut Mall is speculated to take place on Isle Delfino, since the owners of the mall are mostly Piantas. Coconut Mall then returned in Mario Kart 7 as a Retro track.

Other games

Locations on Isle Delfino are shown in a couple of Mario Party minigames. Mario Power Tennis includes both the Delfino Plaza Court and the Gooper Blooper Court, which is set in Ricco Harbor. Delfino Plaza is also one of the boards in Itadaki Street DS and one of the stages in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Economy

Like in the Mushroom Kingdom, Isle Delfino uses Gold Coins as currency. However, Isle Delfino may also use Blue and Red Coins as well.

Law

Isle Delfino has a police department, but they are mainly stationed in Delfino Plaza. They are the ones who arrest Mario at the beginning at the game. Afterwards, Mario is then given a trial. The trial system on Isle Delfino appears broken and unfair. There is no jury and no attorney appointed to the defense of the defendant. On top of that, the defendant does not appear to be given the chance to say something in his defense. A single piece of questionable and unconfirmed evidence (in Mario's case, a poorly drawn sketch) would be enough for the prosecutor to convince the judge that the defendant is guilty. Witnesses (Prince Peach and Toadsworth), seem to be given the right to object, but if the judge is convinced if the defendant is guilty, the objection is overruled, despite the fact that absolutely nothing was said in the defense of the defendant. Because of these severe flaws, Mario was easily found guilty and is forced to clean up Isle Delfino.

Trivia

Isle Delfino and the other islands surrounding it.

• In the English version of Super Mario Sunshine, the places found on Isle Delfino are named partly in English and partly in Italian. In other translations of the game, the names of these places are completely in Italian.
• In the introductory cutscene of Super Mario Sunshine, the player can see other islands surrounding Isle Delfino, which are shaped like a sting ray (west), a crab (southwest), a small fish (south), a sea turtle (east), and a jellyfish (northeast). These islands cannot be visited in the game, and it is therefore unknown whether or not any of them actually have official names.
• In Super Mario Sunshine, all of Isle Delfino (except for Noki Bay) is in a constant heatwave.
• In Super Mario Sunshine, Blue Toad mentions that Yoshis lived on the island a long time ago.
• Many of the locations on Isle Delfino can be clearly seen from some of the other locations on the island, with the exception of Noki Bay, which remains virtually hidden from the rest of the island, though a small glimpse of it can be seen from the top of the large palm tree in the center of Pianta Village.
