Platforms are obstacles in almost every adventure video game, including the Mario series. They are physical objects that the player jumps across to get through levels. In sidescrollers, the player can jump up through the bottoms of platforms (and in Super Smash Bros' case, drop through the tops as well). However in 3D games, the player can not jump through them and have to jump around them. Some platforms cannot be jumped through in sidescrollers (Mario Bros. for example), but most can.
