I really don't want to be a pest about this, but the way that type of comparison works is the way I phrased it. Waluigi (rival #2, we'll say) is the the Wario (rival #1) to Luigi's (original #2) Mario (original #1.) It's sort of a moot point now, but I just wanted to clarify why I kept changing it.

No, I'm not. I'm saying he's the Wario to <i>Luigi's</i> Mario. There's a big difference. What it means is that Luigi is the subject (for lack of a better term), and Mario is the descriptor, being used figuratively to refer to the fact that he's the counterpart to Luigi, as Wario is the counterpart to Waluigi. Maybe it'd make more sense with quotes, like so: Waluigi is the "Wario" to Luigi's "Mario."

Right, but "Mario" is being used figuratively, not literally. In this case, "Luigi's Mario" means that something attributed to Mario (him being the basis for a rival) is being used to describe Luigi. Maybe I should use a different example, as all the similar names make it a bit clunky to describe. For instance, one might say that Kazooie is the Diddy Kong to Banjo's Donkey Kong. The order of reference goes "Sidekick 2/Sidekick 1/Original 2/Original 1." Replace the Kongs with the Mario bros. (#1: DK->Mario, #2: Diddy->Luigi) and the B-K characters with the Wario bros. (#1: Banjo->Wario, #2: Kazooie->Waluigi) and you'll see what I'm getting at. I can see how that might get confusing, but "Luigi's Mario" is the proper order.
