Oil Drums are cylindrical metal drums filled with oil that have the ability to produce Fire, creatures, or other monsters from themselves. They have appeared throughout the Donkey Kong series as recurring obstacles.

Donkey Kong[edit]

Oil Drums first appeared in the Donkey Kong arcade game. Here they are found in several levels and are quite harmless, unless a barrel ends up being burned up inside them, then they will produce Fire, which can harm Mario.

Donkey Kong Country[edit]

Oil Drums later appear in Donkey Kong Country. In this game, there are two types of Oil Drums: the ones that release enemies have a skull and two bones displayed on them, and the ones that spurt flames have the words "OIL" displayed on them. Oil Drums either attack by expelling flames, which can injure Donkey or Diddy, or expelling enemies (most commonly Slippas). In the level "Oil Drum Alley", Donkey and Diddy must jump from one floating Oil Drum to the next (while they are not spurting fire) in order to reach the end of the level. Any barrel can take out the skull Oil Drums, but not the ones that release fire. TNT Barrels can only take out the ones that release fire. There's also an Oil Drum boss named Dumb Drum.

Donkey Kong Land[edit]

Oil Drums also appear in the semi-sequel to Donkey Kong Country, Donkey Kong Land. Nothing has change with the Oil Drums in this game, acting much the same as they do in Donkey Kong Country.

Donkey Kong Country 2/Donkey Kong Land 2[edit]

In Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest and Donkey Kong Land 2, an Oil Drum can be seen in the background of Klubba's Kiosk.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong[edit]

Oil Drums appear in the game Mario vs. Donkey Kong. They constantly move up and down. They can only be defeated by a Hammer.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis[edit]

In Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis, Oil Drums act the same as they do in the original Donkey Kong, where if Donkey Kong throws a barrel and it lands in an Oil Drum, it will create a Fireball enemy. They only appear in the final battle against Donkey Kong.

DK: Jungle Climber[edit]

Oil Drums do not appear in DK: Jungle Climber, but there are barrels that resemble Oil Drums called Oil Barrels. However, they are a collectible item and not an obstacle.

Mario Party 10[edit]

A single Oil Drum makes an appearance as a decorative feature in Mario Party 10. It appears next to a Dice Block Space, located at the right side of the Donkey Kong Board. The Oil Drum does nothing but ignites itself.

Super Mario Odyssey[edit]

In Super Mario Odyssey, Oil Drums are found in 8-bit segments in Metro Kingdom and the Darker Side, using their appearance from Donkey Kong.
