It appears partway through most stages and serves as a checkpoint of sorts. If a Yoshi loses a life after passing through one, he can restart at the point of the Middle Ring. Also, passing through a Middle Ring will increase Yoshi's Star Power by ten (giving him one and ten more seconds) and turn all on-screen enemies into stars.

If Yoshi dies in the SNES or DS version and reaches a Middle Ring, the player will be able to keep their start count (including the extra 10 from reaching the ring) and keep the eggs that the player had before hand. However, in the 3DS version, the player's star count will always go back to 10 and the egg count will reset to zero if the player dies and reaches a Middle Ring.

It appears partway through most stages and serves as a checkpoint. If a Yoshi loses a life after passing through one, he can restart at the point of the Checkpoint Ring. Also, passing through a Checkpoint Ring increases the Yoshi's Countdown Timer by ten and turns all onscreen enemies into stars. However, if the player returns to the map or gets a Game Over, they have to start the course from the beginning.

If a Yoshi loses a life after reaching a Checkpoint Ring in games of the Yoshi's Island series up until Yoshi's Island DS, the player keeps the star count (including the extra ten from reaching the ring) and eggs that they had when they touched it. However, in Yoshi's New Island, the player's star and egg counts reset to ten and zero, respectively, if a Yoshi loses a life and restarts from a Checkpoint Ring.
Despite their name, Middle Rings are not always placed in the middle of a stage. Some can be found at the very beginning, or not until near the end. A few stages even have multiple Middle Rings and there are always a couple before boss fights.
