This events starts with the players' characters being announced, before showing character on the starting platform. It then shows how to swim with the character. This is dependent on the character the player choose. Before the race starts, the player is able to hold Wii to charge up and get a short boost. When the word "Go" appears on screen, the player must swing down the Wii remote to start the event. Doing so with perfect timing grants the player a starting dash. The player then needs to swing the Wii Remote (and Nunchuk) as shown to swim, but not too fast, or the character overheats and stops in place. Each character has a specific stroke with a different swinging motion:

*Crawl (Swing Wii Remote up and down horizontally): Mario, Luigi, Bowser Jr., Peach, Daisy, Shadow, Mii
*Breaststroke (Swing Wii Remote to the right): Bowser, Wario, Amy, Dr. Eggman, Silver
*Water Sprint (Swing Wii Remote up and down): Sonic
*Butterfly (Swing Wii Remote in a figure of eight shape): Waluigi, Donkey Kong, Metal Sonic, Blaze, Knuckles
*Dog paddle (Swing Wii Remote in a circle): Yoshi, Tails
*Gator style (Swing Wii Remote side to side): Vector
Once the player gets to the other side, the character bounces off the wall. Swing down the Wii Remote allows the player to keep some speed, while doing it with perfect timing does it the best. At any time, the player can press Wii to do a Special Stroke. When the character reaches near the start platform, the player can press Wii to stretch out the character's hands. Once the character touches the platform, their time is recorded.
