A "Religon" in Super Paper Mario

After you read this, please do not insult my beliefs or what I said, this is what I feel, and I want to see if anyone else agrees.

I know it is just a game, but it seems that the new Paper Mario game seems to introduce somewhat of a religon into the Mario universe. Of the many reasons that keep me from playing it, i.e. Peach marrying Bowser, this is the one that troubles me the most. After research through this site and others, I have come to conclude that this is a very dark game filled with romance, prophesy, and other sinister elements. As a strong Christian, I feel that some of the key elements in the story are a little anti-religous to my faith. The "chosen one", the Dark Prophecy book, the revenge of that Bleck guy (in which he destroys his own species), the reincarnation of the same character, and the entire reason Mario is fighting for, makes me feel very uneasy and worried. As I can recall, Pokemon went the same direction, complete with a starting myth similer to the Creation described in the Bible, right down to "in the beginning..."! Pokemon's newest game, Diamond and Pearl, have completely destroyed all of my enjoyment in the series. Now, Mario threatens to do the same thing. I have loved Mario since I was four years old, and I simply do not want to give up my enjoyment of one of the greatest franchises the world has ever seen.
Can anyone explain why so many great game series have taken such a dark path? Is it because the public demands dark games with a religon of its own? I can remember the days when game universes did not need an explanation of how they came to be, when kindness and good behavior represented the forces of good, and the evil was not as "bad" as they are now. Just look at Bowser; he actually has a hint of mercy and kindness, compared to the much more evil creatures of today. To me, this story of revenge, prophecy, the chosen one, and the ultimate defeat in love seem like they were pulled directly out of an anime series.
This so-called "children's game" has implications, themes, and a plot similar to the Second Coming of Christ (Revelation), complete with Heaven and its opposite, as well as a foretold prophecy, doomsday/apocalypse, and the ultimate victory of good. Even though this game has a happy ending, I still really dislike it. If it was up to me, this game would have had an ESRB rating of T. Just think about it. If I played Mario since I was four, imagine what the young children intereasted in Mario today would see.
To sum it up, Mario is not the same loveable game series as it used to be...

While the plot elements may be cliche, I do not think any dark themes are forecast by it, nor that Nintendo wished to drive in that direction. And gamers are demanding believable and complex story plots for these big games, now that technology has made it all possible. In the 90s, it was just good & evil because just playing the game was fun, the story didn't matter. In these Paper Mario games, a good story keeps the player interested in an otherwise truly-2D game. However, the storys are just supposed to keep the game together – collect it all into a sensible purpose for the whole experience. You shouldn't take this as such as seriously as you are, and while maybe E10+ might have been appropriate for this game more, certainly not T – no blood violence or sex mentioned. Pretty much what Wayoshi said; while the "Mario goes off to save a kingdom and a damsel" plot was good early on, now that technology has improved, people want more than that (complex plots and twists, sub-plots, more threatening villains, etc). Nintendo pretty much has no choice but to give the public what they want (but not make it themselves apparently, they have other developers do it for them, like Intelligent Systems, creator of the Paper Marios and Fire Emblems). -- Sir Grodus 20:18, 7 January 2008 (EST)

I understand your point, but I am not against a good story, just the details. When the origanel Paper Mario came out, the "star granting wishes" beginning never bothered me, despite the fact that when the characters make a wish, it looks like they are praying. That is not what I mean. I mean what this one has gone to. Yes, the Mario universe had a beginning, but I would have better enjoyed something to the lines of the stars made their world, and leave it that, not this whole "prophecy" thing. As a religous person, I believe phrophecy should stay in religous texts like the Bible. Still, I think what you said is true. I just miss the villans who had a heart every once and a while.

It's just a game! In response to your statement about Pokémon, the book in the Canalave Library explains the supposed creation of the Pokémon universe. It has nothing to do with our universe, and it in no way contradicts the Bible. Pixl 08:21, 30 January 2008 (EST)

Jester-like creature: enemy or boss?

I saw on http://www.gamesradar.com/us/wii/game/reviews/article.jsp?articleId=20070330102557989000&sectionId=1000&pageId=20070330103441328028 (in a video) that there is a place with very many Jester-like creatures (Like the Dull Bones and Smorgs). Thus they are enemies. And I saw on the official japanese site in the story that there is only one.

I think I beat the game two weeks ago or something. But no, with the exception of a Catch Card Yoshi makes no appearance whatsoever (and that Catch Card is just the Yoshi Kid). Otherwise, there isn't even a cameo.--Dreyfus2006 23:09, 7 May 2007 (EDT)

Yoshi doesn't appear in the game, but a rock that looks like him does, and references to Yoshi's Island are made in the Sammer Kingdom.

It's a game mechanic. If it's separate, TTYD won't be featured because the content is not included. If you basically have the audience mentioned in both the Audience article and the TTYD article, then it's duplicate content and there is no point in having an article. - A Link to the Past 22:34, 7 May 2007 (EDT)

Hey, guys. I just want to say that the audience had nothing to do with the gameplay of Super Paper Mario. They just came whenever the players did stylish moves. Nothing else. No helping, no hindering. They were only paper cut-outs anyway! Oh, and by the way, I have another topic on the "Whose Better..." section of my userpage, in case anyone's interested.

Chapter 7: Too many religous refrences

The problem I found on many pages of this article were mentioning Hell and other religous things. Bonechill's Triva says something about a passage in the Bible, and this is a family friendly site. I don't think religon should be included, minus Greek myths. On The Underwhere, someone said that it was like Hell. This is not true, because you when you die in the game you go there no matter what, even if you have been good. Hell is only for bad people. There is no evidence in the game you go to The Overthere for being good. I think these should be removed, or at least replaced. We don't need serious topics like religon on this site.

Super Paper Mario makes several clever references to religous topics. We can't conceal that, it's obvious. Err, and I don't understand your point what makes a site family unfriendly if one makes a few references to religion. If we had to clean the site from every roughly religous reference, we also had to remove the fact that Red and Akuman are devils and that Wicked Wario looks like one, for example. --Grandy02 13:53, 17 April 2008 (EDT)

Someone named Turtle Shroom needs my help, here, now. About what you think about SPM and the direction which Mario games are driving, don't worry, there's no problem. You say: - He never passed by such a problem like this and.../ I reply: Oh yes I passed by something WORSE (when i say WORSE i mean REALLY WORSE) than yours. All startedwhen i heard a cd (i was forced to listen to it) about these bad things (not Nintendo related, were bad things from enterprises, I repeat NOTHING to do with Nintendo) what happened is the following, I forgot the CD ideas for some time but they got like "hidden and stuck" in my brain. In January 1st 2008 the REAL problem showed up: I was watching an episode of an anime (Nadja) at Youtube in Spanish, then I middle of episode 41 a word mentioned in the cd appeared (in my country it means a bad bad bad thing, but in Spain it means just tide). I got like with this stuck in my head "Nadja is NOT good for you! you'll go to hell" But The anime was tottaly pure and innocent, with this idea i linked BAD ideas with thing that actually had NOTHING to do with them like other word of Nadja. In the last week of January i was going to msn and i decided to choose a new pic i was about to choose the Blue Koopa Troopa's GIF when i saw that it's name was "818", then something came in my head " If there's 818, there's (that number-you know what number)" but the Picture came from an unnoficial website plus the numbers were for organize the pics! however that same idea applied with Nadja came "If you like Mario....". It didn't stop in there! this stupid idea got bashing my head for months! I feared what could be next, and boy, THERE CAME LOTS OF STUPID IDEAS such hidden messages, religious bad things and bad stuff not just from Mario, but FROM EVERYTHING! (I ONCE MORE REPEAT, ALL THESE IDEAS WERE LATER PROVEN TO BE ---FAKE----), In april, i saw that Ashley Fast Spin thing (CheckAshley and Red), I got crazy (i rly thought that i was going to hospice, because i started to hate Wario and related, but thanks to this wiki, I saw Nintendo's Apologies), the problem still didnt ended, though: Right after i saw that "U R MR. GAY" in Super Mario Galaxy boxart, then i thought "Mario makes people gay!" i just got angry at Mario for the heck of it (I had some pics of nintendo characters and with all my anger i burned them and threw on water), after i regreted it after i saw that it could have been an accident, a "work" of a Sony Fanboy or just a joke (thanks to someone very special, my sister and a two friends who helped me). When I thought that i was free (During May-June), there came another stupid brain-stucked idea: swastika-looking things! You wont believe where i searched for this (Once more = FAKE IDEA), In June some people helped me and i got better. In July another bad idea... (I wont tell it since it can damage people's minds-But once more = FAKE) this idea came from wikipedia and i got 3 months with it stuck on my head thinking "OMG Nintendo is evil" (But in fact Nintendo is one of the nicest enterprises i ever seen), Believe me I searched 99,9% of kinds of hidden messages, innapropriate things, and bad stuff in Nintendo's products and games (ALL PROVEN TO BE FAKE, there is just that U R MR GAY and Ashley's one(all apologized by Nintendo)). I fought in my mind against the worst problem of this year: A thing called "Evil Conscience" that it's like a Conscience but ALL EVIL and LIAR. I had the help from: First of all :God, after my family, the minister, my friends, Mario Wiki, UnMario Wiki and Yahoo Answers. Listen well, God won't punish you by playing Nintendo games (dont ask me about Pokémon, about this i dont know). Sony and Microsoft have been more liberal than Nintendo in this aspect. About SPM plot, dont worry. Think with me: If you were a developer, promised to show a game for 2007 and had NO IDEAS? What's the problem in searching for ideas in the Bible? Plus Mario fights against evil and evil always lose. About Underwhere, here's my concern> Mario was sent for it for defeating that bad person who lives there, and videogame characters dont die at all, for instance DID YOU see WRILINKY KONG (Wrilinky died) there? nope. So the underwhere is just a world and nothing more and it was taken from Greek Mythology.
