Waluigi: Luigi's Wario.

Waluigi is Luigi's counterpart and rival in the Mario series, and is Wario's partner. He was deliberately created to be a selectable character in various multiplayer games, and usually appears in spin-off titles. He has appeared in several games, although none of them are actual Mario adventures. His first appearance was in Mario Tennis for the Nintendo 64. Later, along with Princess Daisy, he joined the Mario Party series roster in Mario Party 3 and has been playable in every main entry in the series since.

Biography

After his debut in Mario Tennis, Waluigi instantly rose up to the ranks of other Mario superstars, appearing in nearly every Mario sports or party game.

In his debut game, Waluigi's back was somewhat hunched, the only sounds he made were horrid moans and evil laughter, and when he'd win, he'd have purple, glowing eyes. While he was originally personified as a dark, sinister character in his early games, he has recently been portrayed as a form of comic relief.

Waluigi commited his first actual evil deed in Mario Party 3, when he stole the Mischief Star Stamp and challenged the player to a duel for it, on his board full of explosive traps: Waluigi Island.

Just one year after his debut, Waluigi got a trophy devoted to him in Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Waluigi is almost always portrayed as a cocky, eccentric character. When he isn't playable, he usually serves the role as a Bob-omb weilding antagonist. In Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix, he stole the musical keys. Attempting world domination, Waluigi tried to use the keys to make himself a better dancer, so that he could "hypnotize the entire world" with his fancy footsteps. He also attacked Mario, Luigi, and Toad with a barrage of Bob-ombs. In the movie intro to Mario Power Tennis, Waluigi formed an alliance with Bowser and Wario to destroy the Mario Bros. with Bob-ombs and Bullet Bills. Although the incident has not been mentioned since, it proves that Waluigi can still perform the same evil deeds as the rest of the bad boys. Also, in the movie, Waluigi and Wario vandalize a Mario Bros. poster and are almost arrested by the police.

Waluigi has yet to star in his own game, although a Waluigi fan game has been made. There are rumors that Waluigi will be playable in upcoming Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but this is unconfirmed.

With the inclusion of Baby Wario in Yoshi's Island 2 for the Nintendo DS, it is possible that a baby version of Waluigi may appear.

Physical Description and Traits

Waluigi wears a purple cap with a yellow Γ symbol on it, as well as a purple undershirt and black overalls. Mario's evil counterpart, Wario, wears a "W", which is also an upside-down "M". Likewise, Waluigi wears a vertical mirror image of the letter "L". He has a large, pink nose, orange shoes, and short, brown hair. His age is confirmed to be the same as Luigi's.

Waluigi is the extreme form of his rival. While Luigi is tall and skinny, Waluigi is very tall and very skinny. Many biographies describing him in Mario sports games mention his odd facial elements, including his sharp jaw, pointy nose, and flat feet.

Powers and Abilities

Even though he has not been featured in any Mario platformers, Waluigi still has some unique abilities of his own.

Games

Waluigi has been playable in Mario Tennis, Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Mario Power Tennis, Mario Superstar Baseball, Mario Kart DS, Super Mario Strikers, and Mario Hoops 3-on-3, and is presumed to be playable in upcoming Mario Strikers Charged. He has also been playable in every game in the Mario Party series since 3, excluding Mario Party Advance. He is an unlockable character in Mario Golf: Advance Tour. He can only be unlocked if a GameCube Gameboy Advance Link Cable is used.

Waluigi's Super Smash Bros. Melee trophy information says that he has been antagonizing the Mario Bros. even before his debut and confirms his age to be the same as Luigi's.

In Game & Watch Gallery 4, Waluigi appears in the modern version of Boxing as Luigi's final opponent. In Rainshower, Waluigi would try to mess up the player's work on Hard mode.

There is an alternate Waluigi costume that Mario can wear in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. By wearing both the L Emblem and the W Emblem together, Mario will wear a purple undershirt and black overalls, just like Waluigi.

Waluigi will be appearing in the upcoming games Mario Party 8, Mario Kart Arcade GP 2 and Itadaki Street DS.

Other Appearances

Despite Waluigi's lack of popularity among most fans, Waluigi was one of the few Marioverse characters chosen to appear as purchaseable characters in Nintendo Monopoly. Waluigi was the least expensive character to purchase, and as such he was also one of the least profitable characters. The cost to purchase him was $60.

Trivia

  • According to the official Mario Power Tennis website, Waluigi can be contacted via the following adress: Waluigi, 26 Grimace Lane, Mushroom Kingdom, IMG EEK.
  • Waluigi's Г symbol is also a letter in the Russain and Greek alphabets.

Name

Waluigi has two meanings in Japanese. The Japanese word for "bad" or "evil", warui, is also a condescending apology, in stead of ones which are more polite. Waluigi's name is a portmanteau of "evil" and "Luigi", forming "Evil Luigi". However, some think his name is a cheap offshot of Wario's name, not knowing the name's Japanese origins.

Waluigi can also be pronounced in Japanese as waruiji, an anogram for ijiwaru, Japanese for "mean-spirited".

Also worth noting is that the same sound is used for L and R in Japanese.

Relationship with Wario

In Waluigi's beginning, he was described as Wario's dimwit older brother. However, this was later retconned in Super Smash Bros. Melee. The two may be related; they do share the same facial elements and mental characteristics; but Waluigi's SSBM trophy bio confirms that the Wario-Waluigi relationship is indeed unclear. However, it at least be inferred that they are good friends.

Wario and Waligi's team name in Mario Party 5: "Wiked Bros.", implies that the two are brothers, however, putting Luigi and Yoshi on the same team makes the team name "Green Bros.", and Luigi and Yoshi are clearly not brothers.

Even though Waluigi has good relations with Wario in the Marioverse, he has yet to appear in any Wario game.

Criticism

Due to Waluigi's clunky name and the unoriginality behind his creation, Waluigi is disliked by many Nintendo fans, and is also criticized because of his role in the Marioverse as a "filler" character; a character deliberately made to serve as an extra player in multiplayer games.

Wrecking Crew Connections

Waluigi seems to have connections with the Wrecking Crew games.

Super Smash Bros. Melee Trophy Info

This tall, thin, evil-looking guy seems to be Luigi's rival. He works hard at his mischief: Waluigi reportedly spent a lot of time training for his debut in Mario Tennis by honing his ability to antagonize the Mario brothers. While it's general knowledge that he's the same age as Luigi, his relationship to Wario is unclear.
