In Super Mario World, these are stars on the map that connects various points in Dinosaur Land to Star World. They are placed to provide short cuts across the world, though you'll need to beat the Star World's levels first. All the Star Roads can be found by beating a level with a second exit. If you go to a Star Road in Star World without beating the level in Dinosaur Land that leads to it, the road will be showing on the map but you won't be able to move ahead.

In Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, it’s where everyones wishes go and are eventually granted. It was destroyed by Exor, on his way down to Bowser's Keep. The star-warrior Geno was sent to fix it.

It is called Star Way in Paper Mario, in which the Star Spirits create a winding path of stars to help Mario and his team reach Star Haven. There's a few Embers that blend in with the atmosphere so watch out.

In the game there is a mini-star called Twink that helps Princess Peach to send messages for Mario and also does another things. This star is too important in the game, beacuse in the final battle with King Bowser, the star helps Princess Peach to battle with Kammy Koopa, to win the battle with Kammy, Twink gains power from Peach, and that power becomes the Peach Beam to destroy Bowser's barrier from the Star Rod.

Some fans speculate that Twink has the soul of the classic caracter:Geno from the original Super Mario RPG.
