Spindels are a sub-species of Thwomp that first appears in Super Mario 64. They are cylindrical creatures made of stone that attack by rolling over their targets.

History

Super Mario 64/Super Mario 64 DS

Spindel in Shifting Sand Land.
Mario and a Spindel.

Spindels appear as mummified rolling Thwomps with wide grins and malicious eyes, and they try to run over Mario and cause damage to him. They are exclusive to the pyramid of the course Shifting Sand Land, where they one can be found rolling back and forth in a section of the pyramid. There is a safe spot where Mario can hide, so he can avoid being squished. The Spindels have a partial resemblance to Grindels and share their cylindrical shape with Rhomps, which appear in Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Trivia

  • The name "Spindel" comes from the word spindle, which is the part of a spinning wheel that holds the yarn that is being spun.
