Beta elements

Super Smash Bros. was initially developed by Masahiro Sakurai and Satoru Iwata in their downtime, in a form titled 格闘ゲーム竜王 (Kakuto-Gēmu Ryūō, or Dragon King: The Fighting Game), which lacked Nintendo characters. Iwata, however, felt that the game could not provide the proper atmosphere on a home console without Nintendo characters, and they were soon added and the game was renamed.[1]

Originally, Mewtwo, Meowth, Bowser, and King Dedede were supposed to be playable characters. Mewtwo and King Dedede were cut due to time. Bowser was cut due to limitations of the Nintendo 64. Meowth was most likely removed because of his obscurity as a playable character to the Super Smash Bros. series.Template:Refneeded However, Mewtwo and Bowser were playable in Super Smash Bros. Melee later on, and in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, King Dedede became a playable character in the series.

In the final game, two early Kirby stages are only playable with a GameShark. The stages have strange elements, such as invisible barriers. A working Dream Land stage can be viewed in the "How to Play" tutorial, which itself can be seen by waiting on the title screen. Also, in the character select, the question mark boxes were originally supposed to be colored (in the final version they're all black) and Saffron City also had pink with purple on the rooftop. Also, Final Smashes/Smash Balls were originally planned for this game, but cut for unknown reasons. Recordings of the character's voices during their Final Smash made for the original game of the series are still used in Super Smash Bros Brawl unedited.[2]
