Probably what controls Phanto's
Phantos guard the keys in Super Mario Bros. 2. When you find a key, the nearby Phanto will chase Mario until he drops it or unlock a door. If a key is in a room with a huge Phanto mask in the background, it's eyes will glow red and make a Phanto in the room chase Mario once the key has been grabbed.
Phanto is probably short for phantom.
