It's your standard Goomba

The Goomba is the first enemy to ever appear in the Super Mario Bros. video game for the NES.

They are one of the most common enemies to appear in the series, along with Koopa Troopas and Shy Guys. They are usually small, brown and walk sideways, with no specific objective to speak of. Goombas usually harm Mario by bumping into him, but they've sometimes been known to bite, headbutt or jump on Mario in order to harm him, especially in the Mario RPG series.

Goombas used to be allies of the Mushroom Kingdom, but turned traitor and allied with Bowser. In recent years, however, more and more Goombas have adapted a more peaceful lifestyle, living in harmony with the Mushroom People.

In Japan, they are called Kuribo, which can translate to Chestnut People.Template:Fact

History

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

During the events of Super Mario RPG, Goombas are one of the weakest monsters in the Koopa Troop’s forces. Many were stationed at Mushroom Way, the area between Bowser's Keep and the Mushroom Kingdom. Goombas patrolled the paths of Mushroom Way and would attack or capture any intruders. In fact, Toad was captured by a group of Goombas while the fungus advisor was on his way to the Mushroom Kingdom. Goombas attack enemies by biting and shooting sharp thorns. Additionally, Goombas typically fight in groups of two to three.

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time

In Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, Goombas are once again the weakest members of the Koopa Troop. They were assigned to patrol the halls of Bowser's Castle, attacking any intruder who would dare enter Prince Bowser’s fortress. To attack, a Goomba would simply run into an intruder. They can be easily countered with a Jump attack. Goombas are sometimes aided in battle by Boos.

Goombas also appear in the dungeon of Princess Peach's Castle in the present. Although weak, these Goombas are slightly stronger than their past counterparts. However, they still offer very little experience points and coins when defeated.

Goombas are commonly in charge of Battle Mini-Games in the Mario Party series. A Goomba was Luigi's partner and ally in Mario Party 3. However, some games replace it with a Bob-omb. A Goomba in a rich man's outfit was the host of a casino-themed board in Mario Party 4.

Variations of Goombas

There are many variations of Goombas that appear throughout the series, each having even the most minor separation from a regular Goomba, ranging from strength to color to abilities.

  • Gloomba: A "dark" Goomba that lives in the sewers
  • Chibibo: A smaller Goomba with a different name in Super Mario Land
  • Wanderin' Goom: An odd shaped Goomba
  • Goomba in a Bubble
  • Grand Goomba: A huge Goomba
  • Micro Goomba: Tiny Goomba that can restrict your jumping ability
  • Mugger Micro-Goomba: Tiny Goomba's hiding in Gold Blocks
  • Flying Goomba: Hopping Goomba's with wings
  • Kuribo's Goomba: A Goomba in Kuribo's shoe
  • Para-Goomba: A parachuting Goomba
  • Pirate Goom: A Goomba holding a spear

A common variant is the Paragoomba, a Goomba with white, feathery wings that allow it to fly. Some Paragoombas are only capable of fluttering into the air, while others are capable of flying freely.

The Spiked Goomba is a Goomba with a spike on top of its head. They appear in both Paper Mario and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. If Mario jumps on them, the spike will hurt him. If he's not wearing the Spike Shield Badge, he must hit them with his Hammer to damage them.

Tanoomba only appeared in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, where they were commonly found near the BeanBean Kingdom. They share the regular traits of the Goomba, but are covered in Tanuki fur, a Tanuki tail, and a Tanuki leaf. In battle, they are able to jump high into the air, and suspend themselves in the air temporarily by either swinging their tail or spinning around, using their tail as a weapon to attack enemies. The Tanuki leaf on the top of their head allows them to transform into Mario or Luigi, but will still feature the Tanuki tail. Tashroobas appeared in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, which are the Shroob variations of Tanoomba.

Sub-Species

  • Angry Goomba: An incredibly angry Goomba found in Super Princess Peach that has the ability to create earthquakes.
  • Hyper Goomba: A crazy uncivilized Goomba with green coloring. They often charge before attacking. While charging up, the Hyper Goomba raises its attack power to 8. Same with the Hyper Paragoomba. But when the Hyper Spiky Goomba charges up, its attack power goes up to 9!
  • Gloomba: Goombas that live in the darkness. Same with Paragloombas, Hyper Gloombas, and Spiky Gloombas.

Mario Superstar Baseball Bio

"Though Goombas once lived in peace in the Mushroom Kingdom, they betrayed their homeland to side with Bowser. Exactly how Goomba uses his baseball gear is a bit of a mystery. Maybe you can spot the secret technique as he makes his plays in the field..."

  • Tattle: This is a Goomba. Goombas are what you'd call "small fries." Actually, they're pretty much the smallest fries. ...Hey, wait! I'm one of 'em! You can jump on them or whack 'em with the Hammer. These guys are old school. They've been around since you were in Super Mario Bros.!

Paragoomba

  • HP: 2
  • Attack: 1
  • Defense: 0
  • Location: Goomba Road

Spiked Goomba

  • HP: 2
  • Attack: 2
  • Defense: 0

Hyper Goomba

  • HP: 7
  • Attack: 1
  • Defense: 0
  • Location: Gusty Gulch
  • Tattle: This is a Hyper Goomba. Hyper Goombas are crazy, uncivilized Goombas living in Gusty Gulch. They sometimes charge their power before attacking. That charged attack will take away 8 HP, so watch out when they start to glow. It's a good idea to use Bow or an item to become transparent. The attack will miss for sure.

Hyper Paragoomba

  • HP: 7
  • Attack: 1
  • Defense: 0
  • Location: Gusty Gulch
  • Tattle: This is a Hyper Paragoomba. Hyper Paragoombas are Hyper Goombas with wings. They sometimes charge their power before attacking. Except for that, they're no different from normal Paragoombas, so use a Jump attack to defeat 'em.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Stats and Tattle Information

Goomba

  • HP: 2
  • Attack: 1
  • Defense: 0
  • Locations: Various
  • Tattle Number: 1
  • Tattle Log: The underling of underlings. No other distinguishing characteristics.
  • Tattle: That's a Goomba. Umm... Yeah, I'm one of those, in case you hadn't noticed. Ahem... It says here: "Goombas are underlings of underlings." ...That is totally rude!

Paragoomba

  • HP: 2
  • Attack: 1
  • Defense: 0
  • Locations: Various
  • Tattle Number: 2
  • Tattle Log: A Goomba with wings. Can't reach it with a hammer while it's in the air, but once its damaged, its wings get clipped. It's kind of sad, really.
  • Tattle: That's a Paragoomba. Basically a Goomba with wings. I'm jealous! You can't hammer it while it's flying, but rough it up and it'll totally plummet!

Spiked Goomba

  • HP: 2
  • Attack: 2
  • Defense: 0
  • Locations: Various
  • Tattle Number: 3
  • Tattle Log: A Goomba that wears a spiked helmet. Slightly higher Attack Power than a typical Goomba.
  • Tattle: That's a Spiky Goomba. ...A spiky-headed Goomba. What a creative name. That spike is super-pointy, so it's better to hit it with a hammer than jump on it. The addition of the spike means you'll hurt your feet if you jump on it. Duh!

Gloomba

  • HP: 7
  • Attack: 3
  • Defense: 0
  • Location: Pit of 100 Trials (Levels 1-19)
  • Tattle Number: 7
  • Tattle Log: A Goomba that likes dark, damp places. It must look like that because it lives below ground!
  • Tattle: That's a Gloomba. It likes dark, damp places. It's stronger than a normal Goomba, so be careful. That's not a healthy color for a Goomba, but it doesn't mean it's sick or anything. So don't show any mercy!

Paragloomba

  • HP: 7
  • Attack: 3
  • Defense: 0
  • Location: Pit of 100 Trials (Levels 11-19)
  • Tattle Number: 8
  • Tattle Log: A Gloomba with wings that may or may not get moldy.
  • Tattle: That's a Paragloomba. It's a Gloomba with wings. It's like a stronger version of a Parakoopa. And maybe that's all there is to it. I wonder if living down here ever makes its wings moldy? EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEYUCK! It's too gross to even think about! Bleck!

Spiked Gloomba

  • HP: 7
  • Attack: 4
  • Defense: 0
  • Location: Pit of 100 Trials (Levels 21-29)
  • Tattle Number: 9
  • Tattle Log: A Gloomba with a painful-looking spike that likes damp places.
  • Tattle: That's a Spiky Gloomba. It's a Spiky Goomba that likes dark places. Max HP is 7, Attack is 4, and Defense is 0. Its Attack is pretty high, huh? I'm sure you know this, but try not to jump on the spike. I wonder if I'd look like that if I stayed down here long enough? ...I'd rather not think about that. Are there tanning salons in Rogueport?

Hyper Goomba

  • HP: 8
  • Attack: 2
  • Defense: 0
  • Locations: Twilight Trail
  • Tattle Number: 4
  • Tattle Log: When this hyperactive Goomba charges up, its Attack Power rises to 8, so watch yourself!
  • Tattle: That's a Hyper Goomba. Which means... Umm... It's a hyperactive Goomba! Duh! But if this nut goes BIZZ-ZOW and charges up, his Attack power will be 8 next turn! So you'd better wipe it out between the time it charges up and the time it attacks! And if you can't beat him, then run away, OK?

Hyper Paragoomba

  • HP: 8
  • Attack: 2
  • Defense: 0
  • Locations: Twilight Trail
  • Tattle Number: 5
  • Tattle Log: When this winged Hyper Goomba charges up, its Attack Power rises to 8.
  • Tattle: That's a Hyper Paragoomba. It's basically just a Hyper Goomba with wings. After charging up, you'll be dealing with moves that have an Attack power of 8. Once you damage it, it'll lose its wings and turn into a regular Hyper Goomba. Not that THAT'S all that cool. Even normal Hyper Goombas are dangerous.

Hyper Spiky Goomba

  • HP: 8
  • Attack: 3
  • Defense: 0
  • Locations: Twilight Trail
  • Tattle Number: 6
  • Tattle Log: When this spike-headed Hyper Goomba charges up, its Attack Power rises to 9, so heads up!
  • Tattle: That's a Hyper Spiky Goomba. It's a Hyper Goomba with a spike on its head. After charging up, its Attack power rises to an incredible level of 9! That's SCARY... Beat it before it attacks, or you'll be in peril before you know it, seriously. If only this book listed a way to dodge that attack...
