A Ghost is the recording of a player's driving performance in the Mario Kart series. The concept of Ghosts has appeared in every game in the series so far. Ghost drivers appear as half-transparent characters, exactly representing the driving style of a previously recorded race. These drivers' performances cannot be influenced by items such as Shells, and they also do not influence the current race. Driving against one's own Ghost enables a player to directly match with his own record and thus to improve. Ghost data usually can only be recorded in Time Trial mode, and recording this data may be impossible in too long races.

The item Boo has been referred to as "Ghost" in Super Mario Kart. It makes a character look similar to the appearance of recorded Ghost data: invisible to other players and invincible.
