Toad (species)

Toads, previously known as Mushroom Retainers, are the dominant species of the Mushroom Kingdom. Toads are native to almost every city in the entire kingdom, including Rogueport.
Appearances
Super Mario Bros.
In Super Mario Bros., Toads appear in each of the game's castles. After Mario has destroyed the False Bowser, he frees the imprisoned Toads of the castle. In each castle, there are as many Toads as the castle's world's number (one in World 1, two in World 2, etc.)
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
In Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Toads lived in various towns, such as Mushroom Kingdom, Rose Town and Seaside Town. Many Toads were shopkeepers or inn owners and helped Mario and his party by offering their service. In Rose Town, Mario had to help the Toads which were paralyzed by Bowyer's Aeros. In Seaside Town, the inhabitants, mostly Toads, where imprisoned in a shack by Yaridovich and Mario had to rescue them. Few Toads also appeared in remote areas such as Monstro Town and inside Barrel Volcano.
Super Mario 64
In Super Mario 64, many Toads were found inside the rooms of Princess Peach's Castle. They informed Mario about Bowser's takeover of the castle in the beginning, and gave him various hints about the Power Stars. A few of them even gave Power Stars to Mario.
Luigi's Mansion
Toads appeared throughout the big mansion in Luigi's Mansion. They had come along with Mario, and hid from the darkness at several places. When Luigi met one, the Toad could save Luigi's progress.
Super Mario Sunshine
An entourage of Toads accompanied Mario and Peach to Isle Delfino during the events of Super Mario Sunshine. Toadsworth was among them. They were usually found around Delfino Plaza. One gave Mario the hint to Ground Pound crates to receive coins. However, they did not have any other important role in the game.
Paper Mario Series
Toads appeared in Paper Mario as the main residents of Toad Town. They were also seen in a Toad House in all towns of the game. According to Goombario, they had been sent to the town by Princess Peach to help the people of the town. The Toad inhabitants of Dry Dry Outpost, known as Dryites, have turbans instead of Mushroom Caps.
They appeared again in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. This time they lived in almost every town, showing that they didn't all live in Toad Town.
Mario & Luigi Series
Toads have their own town in the Beanbean Kingdom, as seen in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. Outside the town which is located high above Teehee Valley, Toads made only minor appearances in the game.
In Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, their life force, known as vim, was extracted by the Shroobs to be used as fuel for their UFOs. This happened in the Vim Factory.
Super Princess Peach
In Super Princess Peach, several Toads were captured by Bowser along with Mario. Peach had to rescue them.
Other Appearances
Soccer
In Super Mario Strikers and Mario Strikers Charged, Toads appear as sidekicks for the teams. They are playmakers. They are fast players, but bad in defense. In Mario Strikers Charged, their Skillshot is the Fire Meteor.

Cartoons
Toads in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! were actually tiny humans with Mushroom Caps. Many Toads were features in the series as well, however referred to Mushroom People here.
Mushroom Caps
All Toads have special mushroom caps as the top parts of their heads (just like actual mushrooms). It is debatable whether these mushroom caps are actually parts of the Toads or sorts of hats. it should be noted that Toad often took off his mushroom cap in the alternate-canon Super Mario Brothers Super Show!, revealing a rounded head with a few strands of hair, and that the movements of Toads' mushroom caps in Super Mario Strikers suggest that they are more like hats than parts of the Toads. Most canonical evidence, including Super Paper Mario, suggests, however, that the caps are indeed parts of the Toads. But in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, the engineer of the Excess Express, though the size of an adult toad, has no mushroom cap, but instead a small hat.
The coloring of the spots on any respective Toad's mushroom cap reveals intimate details about their personality, especially in the Paper Mario series and the games that follow it. In fact, if Mario or another character talks to any Toad, they will behave like other Toads with the same colored cap as them.
- Red Spots: Cowardly and subservient. Most common coloration. Example: Toad (post Super Mario Bros. 2)
- Light Green Spots: Shy and always happy to talk to Mario. Second most common coloration.
- Blue Spots: The smallest Toads have blue spotted caps.
- Orange Spots: Very brave. First appeared in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
- Yellow Spots: Loves to tell jokes. This coloration first appeared in Super Mario Sunshine.
- Pink Spots: Very intelligent. This coloration loves to give Mario hints. Toadette seems to be one of them. First appearance was Super Mario Sunshine.
- Purple spots: Bittersweet Toads, such as Chanterelle.
- Brown Spots: Toads who are older have this coloration, such as Toadsworth (even though he had this coloration even when he was young).
Special Types
- Pink Cap with White Spots: Usually female, such as Toadette. However, the Radio Contest Toad also has this cap type, and is presumably male.
- Black Cap with White Spots: Only one in existence, serves as the conductor of the Excess Express.
- Black Cap with Yellow Spots: Only seen on Ghost T. and a disguised Yellow Koopa.
- Black Cap with Red Spots: Only seen on a disguised Red Koopa and the station workers in Shy Guy's Toy Box.
- Black Cap with Black Spots: Only seen on a disguised Black Koopa, possibly nonexistent.
- Black Cap with Green Spots: Only seen on a disguised Green Koopa, possibly nonexistent.
- Black Cap with Blue spots: Only seen on the workers on the Excess Express.
- Mario Party Toads: Various exclusive colors, as well as one Toad having stars on his cap.
- White Cap with Red diamond-shaped spots: Likes music, like Toadofsky.
- Also, the Toads of Rose Town have striped mushroom caps rather than spots like normal Toads.
- In the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy, Toads will wear stars on their caps as well as talk to Mario out in space. They are known as Cosmic Toads, though the name is conjectural.
- Sergeant Starshade and General Starshade also have star shaped spots.
- Elderly Toads have faded coloration on their mushroom caps.
Possible Sub-species
As seen on the picture to the right, Toads in the comics appeared drastically different than their game counterparts. They could be a sub-species of Toads, or simply look different then others, like animals' fur colors in real life.

Trivia
- Interestingly, in the code of Super Mario Bros. 3, there is what seems to be a "Toad Suit" similar to the Tanooki Suit and Hammer Bros. Suit. However, it has been removed from the game and the coding does not give a clue to what abilities it may have bestowed upon Mario.
