Earthwake, Mario & Luigi: Dream Team

Earthwake is a giant robot who is a boss in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. He serves to guard the Nightmare Chunk holding Bedsmith and is the second boss fought in Dreamy Wakeport. His boss battle is the third giant Dreamy Luigi battle in the game.

Appearance

Earthwake appears as a humanoid robot figure made of Wakeport's white various buildings, with his head being a tower with glowing windows for eyes.

History

While exploring Dreamy Wakeport to save Bedsmith, Mario and Luigi come across his Nightmare Chunk trapped inside what appears to be a tower like building. However, the Pi'illo collector Pi'illoper appears and warns them of a 'terrible guardian' who will attack anyone who tries to remove the Nightmare Chunks nearby from their prison, and who has destroyed many past explorers who have attempted to do the same. When Mario and Luigi hit the ! blocks nearby, the building next to them is revealed to be Earthwake's head, an alarm siren goes off and the boss battle with him commences.

After the battle, Earthwake is destroyed and Bedsmith is freed. As such, he doesn't appear for the rest of the main adventure.

Battle

In battle, Earthwake fights in a way fairly similar to the Tower of Yikk boss from Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, in that he tries to knock Luigi into the ocean with his attacks (and in that Luigi has to do the same to defeat him). His actual attacks do work differently however.

His primary attack is to make the various parts of his body rotate around his head as a shield. Luigi has to swat the pieces away with his hammer to leave the head open to attack, otherwise the remaining parts will ram into him and cause damage.

Another attack he uses has him create a ball made out of Wakeport's buildings and roll it towards Luigi. Luigi has to counter by jumping on top of said ball and using it to ram into Earthwake via tilting the 3DS system. He'll also send out floating pieces of debris, that will then try and either ram into Luigi or heal the boss. He can also generate metal armour that stops him being knocked back. Depending on where the armor is placed, it can be destroyed with the Drill Stomp or with a jump. If the armor is only on his head, the latter attack will work, but if it is on his entire body, the Drill Stomp must be used.

Earthwake can also set up a formation of yellow, red and green blocks that Luigi must Hammer Chop or Hammer Uppercut to prevent the most hindering blocks from being used by Earthwake. If any green blocks are left, Earthwake will send them at a low height at Luigi, which he must jump over. If any red ones are left, Earthwake will send them at a high height at Luigi, which he must duck under. If any yellow blocks are left, Earthwake will use them to heal a bit.

Finally, Earthwake can turn into a giant hammer and swing towards Luigi in either an upwards or downwards arc, which has to be either ducked under or blocked with a hammer strike. This attack isn't used until the last third of the boss battle, at least outside of Hard mode.

Additionally, if Luigi gets knocked back into the ocean by Earthwake's attacks, Earthwake will try and repeatedly smash down on Luigi's head with a metal plate. Luigi has to jump with good timing to 'find a way out' and resume the battle.

Earthwake X also appears in the Battle Ring, as the third opponent faced in the Giant Luigi arena. There are no major changes to his battle here. The only difference between Earthwake and Earthwake X is the color of his building's body: Earthwake have white buildings; Earthwake X have gray buildings.

Hard Mode Differences

In hard mode, Earthwake has a few changes in terms of attacks, like the other giant bosses in the game. He attacks Luigi in hammer form more often, sometimes as his second attack and attacks up to ten times per turn in said form instead of about five. Earthwake also uses larger block formations that force Luigi to leave more blocks left, leading to more cases of Luigi having to dodge them.
