Ostro

Ostros were ostriches that Shy Guys could ride in Super Mario Bros. 2. They hop along the ground and run back and forth when they don't have a rider. Players can jump on top of an Ostro an ride it across obstacles if it doesn't have a Shy Guy rider.

Cartoons
Several Ostro, though not referred to as such, appeared in several episodes of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!; starting with the episode "Butch Mario & the Luigi Kid / All Steamed Up" where, Ostro were used by Mario, Luigi, Snifits and several other characters as steeds to travel through the Wild West.
A single Ostro, wearing light armoring, also makes a small appearance in the episode "Love 'Em and Leave 'Em / Will the Real Elvis Please Shut Up!", where it is used by a Beezo as a steed.
In the episode "Brooklyn Bound / Cher's Poochie", Ostros, used once again by Snifit, appear as the main mode of transportation for the Koopa Pack, with Koopa Khan even riding one.
Movie
Ostros were also given homage in the Super Mario Bros. movie, which featured a sign with the word "Ostro" on it; this sign is thought to be advertising a company or organization of somesort.
Trivia
- In the credits of Super Mario Bros. 2, Ostro's and Birdo's names were switched. This, like many other mistakes, was fixed in remakes of the game.
