A sprite of a 3-Up Moon from Super Mario World.

3-Up Moons are moon-like items that first appear in Super Mario World. They are shaped like moons, have eyes and a mouth, and can be found on the ground. They are extremely rare, and very difficult to get. They have a similar effect as 1-Up Mushrooms; however they give Mario or Luigi three extra lives instead of one. Also, if the player replays the level, the moon will disappear from where it was until the game is reset. Most, but not all, 3-Up Moons are only accessible if Mario or Luigi have a Cape Feather.

3-Up Moons reappear in the Wii U game, New Super Mario Bros. U. They are within 3-Up Moon Blocks and can only be collected with the efforts of the GamePad player and Wii Remote player(s).

A total of four 3-Up Moons can pop out of a block if four players are playing. It is very difficult to collect 3-Up Moons in very dangerous places. For example, the block above a abyss looks impossible to reach.

Collect them quickly! They will move like Super Mushrooms and other certain power-ups.
