Unfortunately, Photoshop is the best program to open PSD files, after all, it's the program that created them. There are a few PSD viewers online, but I don't think they would allow you to edit the files. However, I stumbled upon [http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/the-best-ways-to-open-a-psd-file-without-photoshop/ this article]: "Similar to Paint.NET, GIMP can be extended by a wide array of plugins. Comment on Manky Kong Article

I wouldn't add speculation into articles, it's unprofessional and you could end up with a warning if this kind of behavior continues. Artwork of Rosalina in Super Mario 3D World Epic Rosalina Tanooki Rosalina model cropped 14:44, 25 February 2014 (EST)

What specific speculation are you referring to? --Hiccup (talk) 14:48, 25 February 2014 (EST)
Please don't do stuff like this: http://www.mariowiki.com/index.php?title=Manky_Kong&curid=16503&diff=1633206&oldid=1615607. It's rather offensive to some people. Artwork of Rosalina in Super Mario 3D World Epic Rosalina Tanooki Rosalina model cropped 16:16, 25 February 2014 (EST)
I definitely support correcting the sort of inane shit statement like the one linked to above, but "repair, don't respond" is definitely a principle that applies to the wiki. --Glowsquid (talk) 20:38, 25 February 2014 (EST)
Yes, I was poking fun at the sentence which I thought was thoughtless. I agree I should have just corrected it properly rather than having the article "comment on itself". --Hiccup (talk) 11:49, 26 February 2014 (EST)

"Beta" pages

Speaking of which, you're looking to improve the beta pages? Cool! I went on an one man(child) crusade a bit over a year ago to organise the pages into the "Early ideas/builds/Unused content/misc" structure that's used now, but I haven't had as much time as I'd like to to throughously rewrite and source non-ridiculous claims. Do you feel the beta ___ namespace has any particularly galling issues beside writing and sourcing? --Glowsquid (talk) 20:38, 25 February 2014 (EST)

I think the name "beta" is ridiculous, since betas rarely have cut content. I'm currently making a prerelease article for TCRF.net (The Cutting Room Floor: a wiki about unused, debug, prerelease (cut) content and version differences (including prototypes). But I am perfectly happy to contribute here as well in some way. If you want some idea of how I think "beta" articles should be done, you might want to look at TCRFs (in my opinion, great) guidelines (here and here). You may also want to look at some articles. --Hiccup (talk) 11:49, 26 February 2014 (EST)
I kinda dislike the "beta" name myself, but while there has been some periodic grumbling to get it changed, it hasn't gained much traction since no one's been able to provide a name that encasuplates all the info (rejected production ideas/games that switched platform or changed radically throughout development/prerelease stuff/unused content still on the media... etc) without being vague or clunky as hell to use. That, and "beta" has inadvertently a sort of shorthand for "early" stuff among a fair number of Mario fan communities. The name's kinda grandfathered in at this point, which isn't the most ideal arrangement, but well. That being said, using "beta" as a shorthand for "stuff that changed during development" is discouraged, so feel free to edit out any instance of the word you see on articles.
I love TCRF (and had to clean more than one instance of plagiarism of it from this wiki, lol)! I'm reasonably satisfied with our current header structure, but I'm still undecided about how the information should be organized within the headers, so I might just take some inspiration from TCRF's method.
Also, just as an head-up, editing message by other users (which you kind of did by splitting my previous verbiage into two headers) in the Talk: and MarioWiki: namespaces is sorta frowned upon, even if it's minor alterations like correcting links or fixing typos. I absolutely don't mind having my messages edited like this, but other wiki users may, so I'm telling you this to avoid potential headaches down the line. --Glowsquid (talk) 12:45, 26 February 2014 (EST)

Considering the content of the above section, I figured this might be of interest to you. --Glowsquid (talk) 10:31, 9 June 2015 (EDT)

fyi, the drive to rename all the beta paegs is officially launched. --Glowsquid (talk) 22:00, 19 June 2015 (EDT)

Re: Source

I don't remember that nor am I contributing to the wiki anymore. There is a possibility it's from the E3 2011 press website, which is now down (this used to be the url: [1]) SWFlashSWFlash.svg

Thanks for the link. Too bad it's offline, do you happen to have a local folder of anything you haven't uploaded to MarioWiki? --Hiccup (talk) 13:55, 6 July 2014 (EDT)

If this is of any help, the French website Gamekult has all press release screenshots of Sticker Star listed by chronological order (7 = oldest press kits, 1 = newest), including the image you linked to on SWFlash' talk. --Glowsquid (talk) 15:10, 6 July 2014 (EDT)

Thanks! French websites seem to be more organised than many english ones! But I'm really looking for lossless PNGs of them, but this website is useful in getting the order right. --Hiccup (talk) 04:08, 7 July 2014 (EDT)

Moving files

Hi. When moving files please remember to update the file name on pages where it is used, as well as tagging the redirect for deletion. Yoshi876 (talk)

Sorry, for some reason I thought that redirects worked with links. I will do that from now on. --Hiccup (talk) 05:19, 4 August 2014 (EDT)

Re: Press Kits

i have a handful on my computer, but i can't get any direct links to ones on the main press site since, afaik, they removed the guest login. do you want me to upload them somewhere? - Turboo (talk) 18:14, 3 March 2015 (EST)

here's all the mario-related ones - also, i'm pretty sure you can still get into the e3 press websites with some combination of E3<year> and Nintendo, you may want to look into that more - Turboo (talk) 23:19, 4 March 2015 (EST)
i'm afraid i don't, the oldest ones are from 2012 (i uploaded them along with the rest). sorry about that - Turboo (talk) 21:20, 9 March 2015 (EDT)

Re: Prima

That was bugging me for a while. They're certainly oddities, aren't they? They don't quite match up with the in-game models, but they're quite polygonal for artwork. The images all came from the site, so I can provide you with direct URLs to the images, since only the actual pages are blocked by the paywall (Goomba, Goomba Tower, and Paragoomba to start off), but considering the whole paywall thing, you wouldn't be able to access the HTML. Hello, I'm Time Turner.

Names

FYI, if you're interested in sourcing names, there's a forum project about this. --Glowsquid (talk) 15:44, 13 June 2015 (EDT)

fyi, when you add a print reference (manual or guide), you need to add the page number. --Glowsquid (talk) 23:55, 15 June 2015 (EDT)

Bear

Just a question: why did you move Bear to its Japanese name while claiming that the English name wasn't sourced? Hello, I'm Time Turner.

Hey Hiccup, as for the Best Buy Demo...

Well, let's just say I wasn't allowed to experiment with level creation, just playing through levels. But I can report that a few new things did indeed arrise. I haven't seen any how certain enemy variations are created, but I'll do my best at the moment to fill stuff in. Red Coin Ring

Since I see that the name Red Ring miss a source for it's name and since we have a source for the name Red Coin Ring, maybe you should move Red Ring page to Red Coin Ring since the later mostly be the official name because of the source.--LudwigVon Sig.png(TALK) 13:50, 24 June 2015 (EDT)

All the stats on the bestiary were pulled from the eGuide version. --Zootalo (talk) 16:54, 25 June 2015 (EDT)

Oh, so they aren't from the game then. I'll add that to the page, if not already done so. Thanks. --Hiccup (talk) 06:35, 26 June 2015 (EDT)

Re: Please explain this edit

Well, it doesn't look blurry and I don't think that was a reason why it needed to be reuploaded. It had good quality. Only put that template if it has poor quality. Thanks. File:PowerKamekSig.jpg (talk|contribs) Kamek Power! 19:29, 27 June 2015 (EDT)

Sprites

Why are you uploading sprites that have poor quality? They are fine how they are. Also, like I said above, you have been putting image quality templates on images that don't need them for poor reasons. Please stop this. File:PowerKamekSig.jpg (talk|contribs) Kamek Power! 19:08, 28 June 2015 (EDT)

Because there are no in-game rips available. The sprites I've been uploading are better than the previous ones, in my opinion. They certainly are not worse. I'll have a look at the image-quality rules. --Hiccup (talk) 05:56, 29 June 2015 (EDT)

RE: Unused

Ah, fair point. I will be more careful with my wording in future edits. Nonetheless, thank you for bringing this to my attention. PidgeyIcon.pngRandomYoshi(TalkPMsC) 13:45, 2 July 2015 (EDT)

RE: Do you know if the Paper Mario unused enemies have battle stats?

If I recall, only stats for the Albino Dino and Dark Paratroopa were found, the stats for them can be found on their pages. As for the ones on the beta elements page, I don't think they were coded into the game and only sprites were found, you can look here [2]. If you were referring to Super Paper Mario, check here [3] Fuzzy in New Super Mario Bros. UYoshiGo99Artwork of a Yoshi egg on a tilt. It is unknown whether this artwork was released with a certain game or not. 18:19, 3 July 2015 (EDT)

Citation need

Please, stop putting citation need template in almost all article, before putting citation need template, check if the article's name don't appear as a level name (like the P Switch since I undo your edit) or in a trophy in Super Smash Bros.--LudwigVon Sig.png(TALK) 09:19, 15 July 2015 (EDT)

Sorry. I keep forgetting those. I'm gonna put it on my user page. :P --Hiccup (talk) 09:37, 15 July 2015 (EDT)

Bowser head statues

You'll need to be a bit more specific; there's no World 8 in NSMB2 (World 6 is Bowser's area, so I went through that), and knowing which specific levels they appear in would be a huge help. Hello, I'm Time Turner.

I could only find one point where they were named: "Move between the platforms to stay out of the lava, avoid incoming swipe attacks, and dodge the fireballs emerging from the Bowser sculptures along the walls." Hello, I'm Time Turner.

Enemy stats

Hiccup, which tool(s) are you using to obtain enemy internal IDs and item drop rates for Partners in Time and Bowser's Inside Story? --Zootalo (talk) 17:37, 16 August 2015 (EDT)

If you're in need of more enemy stats from PiT and BiS, jdaster64 shared these speadsheets on my talk page. The Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story bestiary pretty much has all these stats covered, except for internal IDs (on the flip side, the Nintendo Power Player's Guide covers status ailment success rates and fire damage rates).

Mario Maker Sprites

Hi!

I saw your work on your WIP page, and I was wondering where you got your sprites from. It's okay if they're official, it's just that we've stopped recreating sprites. UserPyroGuy.png (T · C) 08:12, 13 September 2015 (EDT)

I just resized the previous revision of the file. --Hiccup (talk) 08:16, 13 September 2015 (EDT)
Oh, wow! They look like a game rip! UserPyroGuy.png (T · C) 08:17, 13 September 2015 (EDT)
It's the official sprites created by Nintendo (official size too). They are not 16x16, they are officially 160 × 160. (1px = 10px)

Source for this? What do you mean official size? And what is the point, they can be resized in the page, at basically no extra filesize. --Hiccup (talk) 09:59, 21 September 2015 (EDT)

huh

what was this all about. --Glowsquid (talk) 11:05, 4 October 2015 (EDT)

Regarding the image-quality issues

You've added a few image quality templates to some images (like this). What do you mean by a game data rip. Whether it's possible to rip it straight from the game files or not, it doesn't matter. These images was captured directly from the game (using an emulator, which provides the highest capture quality naturally available), with it's native resolution. It's not low quality, it's the original quality.--

08:18, 9 October 2015 (EDT)

'Ripped from emulator is highest quality'. That is just not true at all. First of all graphics are often manipulated a lot by the game and the console, so it may be shrunk down and blurred into the background. Second of modern console emulation often have graphical errors. --Hiccup (talk) 09:43, 9 October 2015 (EDT)
'Ripped from the emulator is the highest quality'- found on the original console hardware, which is what should be uploaded for multiple reasons, including the fact that it shows the original hardware capacities. This is not one of the consoles with high resolution display, that it blends the background and the sprites (It doesn't even do that with models, mind you). So capturing the screenshot then trimming the background should be enough.--
User:MegadarderyUser talk:MegadarderyDashbot signature
13:11, 10 October 2015 (EDT)
I have no problem with models ripped from backgrounds if the screenshot is accurate, but the majority of of these images on this wiki are taken from badly emulated screenshots. --Hiccup (talk) 07:01, 11 October 2015 (EDT)
I'm personally referring to the ones I uploaded myself, which are either hard-ripped from the game (screenshot + trimming), or using GLIntercept. Which does what it sounds like it's doing, "GLIntercept is a program that grabs OpenGL information directly from memory." Which is as close as we can get to the game files, I checked the game files myself, it doesn't contain any file types that the hacking community has managed to open afaik.
More information: the game 'kinda' blends the sprite with the background, the GLIntercept captures the sprite just before it is added to the background, hence the semi-transparent pixels in this image. Look at this: the leftmost is the captured image, and the other two are the uploaded image with different backgrounds, all zoomed to 180px (original 32px). Still not satisfied? What about this? One of those two Fire Toads is edited in, yet it's literally impossible to distinguish.
gm7HpcU.png Fire Mini Toad in the game Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis Fire Mini Toad in the game Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis

If I upload a sprite, that means I did one of the three things, got it from the Spriters resource, hard-ripped it (screenshot with sprite, screenshot with/o. pixel by pixel comparison by an app I made), or extracted it by GLIntercept.--

Re:Your edit summary

This is not really courteous. You have to assume good faith that the user might not be aware of the undo function or edit histories and might be unknowingly adding it back. Weird Mario Door Sprites

Do you mean the rainbow colored sprites below the normal sprites? If so, I haven't applied those. How would I go about doing that(in a photo editing software such as Photoshop, Pixlr, or Gimp)? Personal image for CorrinPersonal Sig for CorrinPersonal image for Corrin 07:22, 8 November 2015 (EST)
You can't apply them properly yet as the data for how they should be applied hasn't been ripped from the game. --Hiccup (talk) 08:41, 8 November 2015 (EST)
According to Random Talking Bush "They're counted as 3D models in-game, so basically they're affected by the levels' lighting conditions. That's something that would need to be set up in a modelling program, like 3DS Max (which I used to apply 'em to the icons)". I don't have a computer that I could use to fix the images with (since I use a chromebook), do you want to do it? Wii U

For the past week, I have been talking with Henry Tucayo Clay (talk) about my sandbox page that is about setting some ground rules for getting the best screenshots for MarioWiki. I say it is near finalized. Overall, he likes where it is going and the rest of the staff like it too but I have a few loose ends to fix up, specifically the Wii U. He told me that you and Megadardery (talk) would be more knowledgeable about the Wii U's inner workings. I suggest you read up what I had to say about the Wii U to him. I know you can't make edits to the sandbox page but you can add your comments here. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 17:43, 9 February 2016 (EST)
