World 2 is the desert world of New Super Mario Bros. 2. This world introduces the new Gold Flower power-up, where Mario can transform into Gold Mario (and Luigi to Silver Luigi). This world has 4 Toad Houses, two are red, one is green and the last is a Star Toad House. It is also the first world with a Ghost House in the game.

This world consists of 11 levels. 8 of them are on the main path, 2 levels are optional and the last is the world's rainbow level. This world is also optional as it can be bypassed by completing World Mushroom. The map music and overworld music of the world is similar to that of World 2 of New Super Mario Bros. Wii. The world layout is also similar to World 2 of New Super Mario Bros.. The boss of this world is Iggy Koopa.

Levels

World 2-Rainbow

To access this level, the timer must end with the two digits '22' (that is, 'x22', where 'x' can be any number) when the player reaches the flagpole of any World 2 level. Once the level is completed, it can be accessed again by satisfying the above condition once more.

The level begins with Mario on the desert floor with several platforms and a green Warp Pipe which takes Mario to the sky. Upon landing in the course, the screen scrolls automatically. Coins begin to fall in straight vertical lines. After that, there will be heightened platforms which the player should use to get the 100 Gold Coin which falls with more coins from above. A Red Ring then appears. Going through it will make 8 Red Coins parachute from the sky. Collecting all eight will put a Gold Flower in the player's inventory. Finally, the last coins fall where Mario jumps off and return to the World Map.[1]

World 2-1

An early NSMB2 screenshot displayed a golden Mario.
Gold Mario shooting gold fireballs.

First, Mario will come across some tilting Brick Blocks, one of them is a ? Block containing a Fire Flower, followed by a Piranha Plant. Throughout the level, there are tilting Brick Blocks which acts as platforms, and Piranha Plants being the main enemies. There is also a Red Ring which will make 8 Red Coins parachute into the level. After the checkpoint, there are also Note Blocks, Koopa Troopas and Koopa Paratroopas. The Gold Flower is also introduced in this level (see Star Coin 2). After the last Piranha Plant, several tilting Brick Block platforms can help Mario reach the top of the flagpole.[2]

Star Coins

The three Star Coins in this level are located very close to each other.

  • Star Coin 1: Before the checkpoint, there is a gap on the ceiling. Attempting to pass through the gap will make a hidden block containing a coin appear. Mario needs to go to the left of the gap and jump towards the right at the topmost point. He should land on a platform. The Star Coin should be in sight now
  • Star Coin 2: After the checkpoint, there is a yellow Warp Pipe. Warping through will take the player underground. The player can find a Gold Flower in a lone ? Block, which allows Mario to shoot fireballs that change Brick Blocks into coins, activate them, or score coins instead of points when killing enemies. When Mario sees the first Goomba, he should stop shooting fireballs (just in case). Mario can then use the Brick Blocks as platforms to reach a ledge where the Star Coin is. He can obtain it by shooting the obstructing Brick Blocks with fireballs. In any case the Brick Blocks were changed into coins, the player can still use the Goomba Tower nearby (if still intact) to leap up to the ledge.
  • Star Coin 3: This Star Coin is located just before the last set of Note Blocks. (If the player just obtained the second Star Coin, he needs to go towards the left.) The player needs to use the Note Block to reach a high tilting Brick Blocks while avoiding the Paratroopas to obtain the last Star Coin.

World 2-2

This aerial level takes place on tikis that have wing-like structures, acting as platforms throughout the level. Mario starts in between two ? Blocks, the latter containing a Fire Flower. This is followed by a Paragoomba and several Brick Blocks. Red Koopa Troopas follow. A Gold Ring appears in between two ? Blocks on the ground under a Koopa which allows Mario to earn extra coins with the Koopa. A Hammer Bro. can then be found (see Star Coin 1). Yellow platforms which tilts with respect to weight follows, where Mario must be careful or else he could fall. After that is the checkpoint, where another Fire Flower can be found. Another tilting platform can be found above another Hammer Bro.. This is followed by a Red Ring. After crossing several gaps, a Boomerang Bro. can be found to the right of several Brick Blocks. On the next platform is another Hammer Bro. on Brick Blocks. At this point Mario needs to travel upwards. Going upwards to the first level the player will encounter a Boomerang Bro. and a Koopa Troopa. To the right of that platform is another platform with a Coin Roulette Block. Going up the next level to the top floor is a Sledge Bro. between a Brick Block (which can be turned into a Gold Block) and a ? Block with a Fire Flower. Going right is the last platform with several tiki heads which can help Mario reach the top of the flagpole.

Star Coins

  • Star Coin 1: The first Star Coin is located above the first Hammer Bro..
  • Star Coin 2: On the platform right after the platform with the Red Ring, Mario can find a gap between the two smaller platforms. Dropping down leads to a yellow Warp Pipe, taking the player to an area with two Boomerang Bros. and the Star Coin, along with several coins.
  • Star Coin 3: In the last part, when Mario encounters the Sledge Bro., he should go towards the left and jump the gap to a smaller platform. He will meet a Paragoomba which Mario has to jump on to reach the Star Coin.

World 2-3

This level takes place underground. The player starts on the desert ground where a Pokey can be found. Entering the yellow Warp Pipe takes the player underground. The main power up, the Super Leaf can be found in a ? Block above the first Pokey underground. After passing a few floating platforms and some Pokeys, the player will encounter a few sets of rotating platforms with several Pokeys on some of them. The player will then find the checkpoint, a Roulette Block, two Coin Roulette Blocks (each Roulette Block has two Spike Tops) and a springboard used to bounce to the Roulette Blocks high up. After passing the checkpoint, there are two platforms moving up and down with a Pokey and a yellow Warp Pipe which warps the player to the next area. There are Brick Blocks, ? Blocks and red POW Blocks in this area (see Star Coin 2), followed by platforms that go in opposite directions (two sets move downwards and one set moves upwards), two of which have Pokeys on them, and a Red Ring. After passing a few more Buzzy Beetles and crossing quicksand, a green pipe can be found to blast Mario out of the cave. Back on the surface, there are several stone platforms with Pokeys floating over a pool of quicksand. Crossing it leads to the flagpole.[3]

Star Coins

  • Star Coin 1: Just after the checkpoint, the player should see two Warp Pipes, the lower one obstructed by Brick Blocks. A Buzzy Beetle can be found on the upper pipe. The player has to pick up the Buzzy Beetle and go to the lower moving platform (the one without the Pokey) and try to activate the outer POW Block. If successful, a path will open for the player to reach and enter the pipe. After entering the room, the player should go left and drop down the hole. There are many Piranha Plants that pop out simultaneously every few seconds. Grab the Star Coin that's on the player's left and head back right.
  • Star Coin 2: At the beginning the second area, there is a gap in between the Brick Blocks. The player needs to carry the Buzzy Beetle found further down the level to just before the gap. Releasing the shell will activate all the red POW Blocks, opening a path to the Star Coin. The player should also watch out for the Goombas.
  • Star Coin 3: When reaching the Red Ring, the player needs to climb up the third set of downward moving platforms while moving towards the right to a platform made of Brick Blocks and POW Blocks. Navigating through the path by jumping from platform to platform will bring the player to the Star Coin.

World 2-A

A payment of 5 Star Coins is required to unlock this level.

This aerial level takes place in a ruin-like setting. World 2-2 can be seen in the background too. Moving platforms which follow tracks make up most of the level which Mario must use to cross the large abyss. Platforms before the checkpoint fall into the abyss after riding on them while platforms after the checkpoint cross onto different tracks. The main power up here is the Super Leaf, which can be found in one of the first ? Blocks and ? Blocks after the checkpoint. A Coin Roulette Block can be found in the beginning of the level. Enemies found here include Koopa Troopas (some walk about on the moving platforms), Paratroopas which block the player's path when jumping from platform to platform and Fuzzies found in the second half of the level.[4]

Completing this level unlocks World 2-Fortress, skipping World 2-3.

Star Coins

  • Star Coin 1: When Mario is on the third moving platform after the Coin Roulette Block, the player should look out for another platform above him and jump onto it. Continuing on normally will take Mario to the Star Coin.
  • Star Coin 2: Just before the checkpoint, although it is very difficult to reach it once the player reaches the checkpoint. When the player reaches a platform with a red Koopa on it, the player should not jump to the platform but wait for the right time to obtain the Star Coin. Alternatively, the player could also use Raccoon Mario to fly and carefully obtain the Star Coin. It would also be easier in multiplayer mode by asking one player to jump down to the Star Coin and bubbling up while the other stay put.
  • Star Coin 3: After the checkpoint, ride the first platform up. At the platform's highest point, there is another platform. Mario should ride this platform to an area with a ? block and a Brick Block. The Brick Block contains a P-Switch. Hit the P-Switch, then follow the Blue Coins. They will lead you to the final Star Coin.

World 2-Fortress

Mario begins on a platform beside a Super Dry Bones with two ? Blocks - the right one containing a Super Leaf. Mario will first need to avoid being squashed by several moving brown platforms by timing jumps correctly. There are several Dash Coins that can be collected. This is followed by a rectangular ? Block containing coins, and several more moving brown platforms. At the top, an Undead Goomba, Super Dry Bones and an ordinary Dry Bones follow. After that is the checkpoint and a rectangular ? Block containing a Super Leaf, followed by more Undead Goombas. Brown platforms at this point have spikes, and there are also some on the wall. Another Undead Goomba can be found (see Star Coin 2). More brown platforms follow, with several rectangular ? Blocks and a Dry Bones. Two Undead Goombas are then found, where several brown platforms drop from the bottom, with some having spikes on them. This is followed by the boss door. The boss here are four Reznors on a wheel with four rectangular ? Blocks.[5]

Star Coins

  • Star Coin 1: At the top of the brown platforms early in the level, the player should see the Star Coin being blocked by a wall. Mario needs to duck on the nearest brown platform when it comes out and wait for the platform to retreat to get the Star Coin.
  • Star Coin 2: Upon arriving at the area as explained above, the player should see a door. Through the door are some brown platforms. The player needs to go up the platforms until the player can see the next door, but not enter it. Going further up is the Star Coin.
  • Star Coin 3: At the point where the player see the boss door, Mario has to wall kick up the brown platforms when they drop down, preferably to the left of the brown platforms. The player then need to dash to the Star Coin before the brown platforms return up.

World 2-Ghost House

This is the first Ghost House in the game. Mario starts in front of a Boo and a ? Block which will move to the left when the player attempts to hit it. This is similar to the following ? Block and Brick Block, which the ? Block contains a Super Leaf. This is followed by a door to the next area. The following area introduces the Boohemoth, which is a big Boo as large is the screen. Similar to a Boo, it will move when the player is facing away from it, and the screen scrolls with it's movement. When Mario is looking at it, it stops. However, if Mario looks at it for a long time, it will peek and move forward slightly. Going through the door, there is a Boo and a Brick Block which turns into a Gold Block. There is a purple block similar to that of World 7-1 of New Super Mario Bros. Wii which moves up and down, blocking Mario's path. Just after that, the floor, which seems to be a normal floor, will turn into bouncy blocks similar to Jump Blocks. A few ? Blocks follow, one of them containing a Super Leaf. A Boo follows. Another purple block can be found which moves left and right. Dash Coins follow with more bouncy blocks, where another platform can be found which lowers when Mario stands on it. Furthur down a tilting purple block can be found with a Red Ring. This is followed by more bouncy blocks, another purple tilting platform and the door to the next area. In the next area, there are several fake doors. The real door is located at the bottom of the area hidden in a platform on the right which goes down when Mario stands on it. The door leads outside of the house, Several Boos circle a platform, which helps Mario reach the top of the flagpole, which is further down the area.[6]

Star Coins

All three Star Coins are located in the second area, where the Boohemoth is.

  • Star Coin 1: The Star Coin is located on a ledge near the second purple block. The player can wall kick up the left side of the ledge using the purple block, or just run and jump from the right to the Star Coin.
  • Star Coin 2: When Mario reaches the first platform which lowers when standing, the player needs to lower it completely to open a path to the Star Coin while ensuring that Boohemoth stops moving.
  • Star Coin 3: Just after the Red Ring are bouncy floors. When Mario reaches a small part of the floor which is higher than the rest, he needs to bounce high to the Star Coin which is rotating about the ceiling.

Secret Exit

After the player sees or collects the second Star Coin, Mario needs to go forward to the lowest floor (not the platform) and trigger a hidden block to the left which contains a vine leading to the flagpole.

This exit unlocks a red Toad House and World 2-B.

World 2-4

Fire Mario and two Pokeys.

This level, a relatively short level, is made up of walls which act as platforms. The level begins with Mario on top of one of them, where he will meet a Goomba. A red Koopa Troopa appears with a Roulette Block located on another wall. The player needs to climb up the wall structures in the level. Several ? Blocks, a Red Ring and enemies such as Goombas and Fire Snakes can be found. This is followed by a Pokey, a ? Block and the checkpoint. A ? Block containing a Fire Flower can then be found. Spinies and Pokeys will then begin to appear more frequently. The player needs to climb up another wall structure to the top, where a long, narrow hole with many coins can be found. Dropping down the hole leads to a yellow Warp Pipe, leading to the final area. A Pokey can be found between yellow platforms, and finally the flagpole can be found.[7]

Star Coins

  • Star Coin 1: Early in the level. There are walls enclosing several areas with entrances that are narrow. Mario needs to go to the second one (not the one blocked by a Brick Block) and enter the enclosed area, where the Star Coin can be found. To enter as Super Mario (or powered-up Mario), the player will need to run and crouch to slide through the hole.
  • Star Coin 2: This Star Coin can only be obtained with Super Mario or a powered-up Mario. On the second wall structure, the player will need to look for the first Pokey. There is a yellow Warp Pipe just beside it. The player needs to enter the Warp Pipe to an underground area. There, a Gold Ring can be found with several Goomba-creating pipes, where the player can earn extra coins. The player needs to ground pound a Brick Block sitting on a yellow platform and from the lower platforms, drop down to a platform which will lower to another hidden area. The Star Coin can be found on a stack of yellow platforms along with a Coin Roulette Block.
  • Star Coin 3: Near the end of the level, instead of falling down the hole to the Warp Pipe, the player needs to continue to the right and drop down the holes to find the Star Coin.

World 2-5

Mario begins on a platform. An orange platform covers the desert floor below which has a Chain Chomp. Several ? Blocks and Brick Blocks can be found, one of them releasing a Super Leaf. Another Chain Chomp can be found on a ledge furthur down the level. Another Chain Chomp can be found beside several Brick Blocks (see Star Coin 1). Mario then should make his way up and to the right. Another long orange platform can be found over a pool of quicksand with a Chain Chomp on it. Several more ? Blocks and Brick Blocks can be found, followed by a Chain Chomp on a stone platform. This is followed by the checkpoint. Mario then reaches an area with stacks of yellow blocks with several Chain Chomps. After that area, more orange platforms follow, along with a Boomerang Bro.. This is followed by another orange platform over two Chain Chomps with a Red Ring. Finally, another stack of yellow platforms can be found with a Boomerang Bro., followed by the flagpole.[8]

Star Coins

  • Star Coin 1: The third Chain Chomp is guarding this Star Coin. The player can ground pound it's stake when he is facing towards the Brick Block wall. The Chain Chomp will then create a path through the blocks to the Star Coin. Alternatively, the player can use Raccoon Mario's tail to break through the Brick Blocks.
  • Star Coin 2: Just before the checkpoint, when Mario reaches the area with the long orange platform, the player should see a Chain Chomp on a stone platform and also a red Warp Pipe which seems inaccessible. The player needs to ground pound the Chain Chomp's stake three times (that is, until it is released) and the platform will automatically lower, allowing access to the Warp Pipe. The pipe leads to an underground area with two Chain Chomps, a ? Block containing a Super Leaf and the Star Coin. The player should not attempt to break the Brick Blocks as it is used as a platform to reach the Star Coin.
  • Star Coin 3: After the checkpoint, there is a stack of yellow platforms. The player has to make his way directly downwards to the Star Coin which is guarded by another Chain Chomp.

World 2-B

To unlock this level, the player needs to complete World 2-Ghost House via the secret exit.

This level is filled with Bob-ombs parachuting from the sky and from cannons. There are also small hills on the desert floor which, when blowned up with a Bob-omb, will release items such as coins. Pokeys are also common here. Mario begins on the desert next to a pool of quicksand, where a Bob-omb parachutes down to several ? Blocks containing a Fire Flower. A Pokey can then be found on a platform in between quicksand with orange platforms above it, where another Bob-omb falls. More Bob-ombs and Pokeys can be found, along with another ? Block containing a Fire Flower. Cannons then begin to appear on a structure (see Star Coin 1). This is followed by the checkpoint and ? Blocks containing a coin and a Fire Flower. There is a ? Switch in the middle Brick Block above the next cannon which makes two Coin Roulette Blocks appear for a limited time. More cannons follow, along with a Pokey. A Red Ring can be found on several orange platforms that follow, which causes 8 Red Coins to parachute down along with parachuting Bob-ombs. Three more cannons come after that, followed by the flagpole.[9]

Completing this level unlocks World 2-Castle, skipping World 2-4 and World 2-5.

Star Coins

  • Star Coin 1: When Mario comes across the first cannons, the player will be able to see the Star Coin enclosed in several blocks. The player needs to blow up the surrounding blocks using Bob-ombs to make a path to the Star Coin.
  • Star Coin 2: Just after the checkpoint, there is a poll of quicksand with coins in it. Let Mario sink into the quicksand to enter a secret area with a small hill. Bob-ombs will be shot out by a cannon. Mario needs to use the cannons to blow up the top of the small hill (with a red coloured mark) to reveal the Star Coin and a fountain of coins.
  • Star Coin 3: This is located above the first Pokey after the checkpoint. Mario has to leap from Bob-ombs that are shot out by cannons when they are at their highest possible point to reach the coin. The best way to do this is to let Mario stand on either cannon (making sure that he does not activate it beforehand), observe the pattern of shooting and leap to a Bob-omb at the right time to reach the Star Coin.

World 2-Castle

Mario under some fireballs.

The player is on a moving platform, which has a kind of button surface. Pressing this button will make the platform move. Many enemies, including bouncing fireballs are found in the path. At the end the player battles Iggy Koopa. His battle is like his battle in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. A Chain Chomp pulls him. The player will have to stomp on Iggy 3 times.

Star Coins

  • Star Coin 1: The first Star Coin coin can be seen high above. To reach it, use the platforms that are under the Star Coin.
  • Star Coin 2: The second coin is swinging back and forth on the ceiling. The player can either use the springboard (from the nearby ? block) or they can try to jump for it.
  • Star Coin 3: The player will need the springboard, hiding in the ? block near the second Star Coin, to reach a red pipe in the ceiling. In this area, the player should run to the left and hit the P-Switch (in the left block). This will allow the player to get the final Star Coin. Alternatively, the player can use the Raccoon Leaf to enter the red pipe.
