It is based on the original arcade game Donkey Kong, and its name comes from Mario's original name from the game, "Jumpman". This is directly referenced in-game, as Toadsworth remarks that the minigame looks familiar. The preview window of this minigame also shows Mario competing against Donkey Kong.
