These stars are scattered along the dark blue ground. In Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Mario, Mallow and Geno travel here for a Star Piece. The hill is quite large and its inhabitants include Geckos, Mastadooms, Mukumukus, Pulsars, and Sackits.
Since its first appearance, it has become a recurring element in subsequent RPG games. In Paper Mario, it was located just north of Toad Town, and it had a similar purpose. It was noticeably less dangerous to travel in this time around. In the English version, it was renamed Shooting Star Summit (check there for its role in that game).
It appears for a third time in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, under its original name. The Star Shrine is located near Star Hill in Partners in Time and the Hill is the location where the boss Commander Shroob is fought. It is quite a small level and enemies include Love Bubbles, Handfakes and Fly Guys. The "spirit of the Cobalt Star" (in reality Elder Princess Shroob) speaks to the Mario Bros. on top of the hill after Commander Shroob is defeated. A pipe to Star Hill can be found in the destroyed Toad Town near the time hole to Princess Peach's Castle Basement.
