Cosmic Mario appears to be the equivalent of [[Koopa the Quick]] and [[Il Piantissimo]] from ''[[Super Mario 64]]'' and ''[[Super Mario Sunshine]]'', respectively. [[Spooky Speedster]], also from ''Super Mario Galaxy'', is a racer as well.
==Cosmic Luigi==
'''Cosmic Luigi''' also appears, replacing Cosmic Mario when the player plays as Luigi. He is very similar to Cosmic Mario, with the only major difference being that he takes advantage of shortcuts more often and uses a large number of [[Long Jump|long jump]]s, making it faster and harder to beat than his counterpart.

Similar entities based on Cosmic Mario appear in ''[[Super Mario Galaxy 2]]'' in the form of the [[Cosmic Clone]]s and the [[Cosmic Spirit]]. Cosmic Clones are slightly different in appearance and mimic Mario's movements, all the while spawning more of themselves, usually in areas where if Mario waits too long, they'll multiply to the point where he can't get around and they'll catch up to him. The Cosmic Spirit is the equivalent of ''[[New Super Mario Bros. Wii]]''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s [[Super Guide Block]], controlling Mario to guide him to a Bronze Star (the Gold Star can only be obtained without the help of the Cosmic Spirit).
In ''[[Super Mario Galaxy 2]]'', despite not being in the game while the player plays as Luigi, [[Cosmic Clone]]s behave very similarly, being slightly faster.

*An unused variant of the Cosmic Mario Race in [[Space Junk Galaxy]] is found in the game files. When players start a race, they start at the coordinate 0,0,0, which is the air that they land on the starting planet. Cosmic Mario cannot win on this race, and players still have to use [[Star Chip]]s to unlock a [[Launch Star]], but Cosmic Mario does not need to use the Star Chips to use a Launch Star. Cosmic Mario does not use voice clips in this variant.<ref>

Not to be confused with Shadow Mario or Cosmic Clone.
Cosmic Mario

First appearance Super Mario Galaxy (2007)
Latest appearance Super Mario 3D All-Stars (2020)

Cosmic Mario is a character that appears in Super Mario Galaxy. His physical shape is identical to Mario, while his outer appearance is blue with stars, resembling space. He also has a high-pitched voice. If Mario enters a galaxy when a Cosmic Comet is orbiting that galaxy, Cosmic Mario appears at the beginning of the level and challenges the player to a race. The player must then race through numerous obstacles and reach the Power Star before Cosmic Mario does. If Cosmic Mario manages to reach the Power Star first, Mario loses a life and must restart the race. Colliding with him during the race causes him to release Star Bits.

At the start of a race, if the player holds Nunchuk Control Stick up, then Nunchuk Z Button when the timer reaches "2," and then hits A Button just as the race starts, Mario or Luigi gets a Start Dash, shown by a yellow color appearing on Mario/Luigi, shrinking gradually as a marker of the end of this effect.

Cosmic Luigi[edit]

Cosmic Luigi also appears, replacing Cosmic Mario when the player plays as Luigi. He is very similar to Cosmic Mario, with the only major difference being that he takes advantage of shortcuts more often and uses a large number of long jumps, making it faster and harder to beat than his counterpart.

In Super Mario Galaxy 2, despite not being in the game while the player plays as Luigi, Cosmic Clones behave very similarly, being slightly faster.
