Arrow Lifts appear first in Super Mario Bros. 3 at the level 7-6 of the Pipe Maze. It's the only level that this object is found. Arrow Lifts are block-like platforms with an arrow over them. If Mario stands on one, the platform releases a decolored form of itself and moves the plumber to the direction the Arrow Lift is pointing. There is another Arrow lift that has an exclamation mark on it. Stepping on this one, Mario can control the direction of this platform up, left or right as he jumps. However, if the plumber stands still while the platform is moving an stumble upon an obstacle, like a wall, the platform will keep moving forwards or disappear, causing Mario to fall.

In Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Arrow Lifts are unusual round objects with and arrow on them that always are spinning. If a Yoshi jumps on it, the Arrow Lift will move in the direction the arrow is pointing. However, It can change its direction if the Yoshis jump on it again or if the object hits over a surface. Arrow Lifts come in two colors, tan, the most common, and blue. They first appear in the level Salvo the Slime's Castle. Arrow Lifts are mainly found within the various Castles and Fortresses across Yoshi's Island.

The rare blue variant is mostly found in areas prominent with ghost species. Those kind of Arrow Lifts disappear a short time after being boarded, the only way to prevent its disappearance is to pick it up with Yoshi's tongue and then spit it out.

*Interestingly, there is a mission in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS in Wet-Dry World called "Shocking Arrow Lifts!". However, it doesn't contain the same Arrow Lifts.
