== Template question ==
== Template question ==

Hello. Is it possible to code [[Template:PlayNintendoQuiz|this template]] so that the answer boxes only appear once you fill in their corresponding parameter? ("answer1", "answer2" etc.) For example, if I want the fourth box ''not'' to appear, I can simply not add anything to the "answer4" field. I'm asking because [[Trivia: Are you an expert Yoshi-ologist?|this quiz]] only has three answers for each question instead of the usual four, so it would be very handy to make use of the same template for this one. Otherwise I would have to create a separate template that only has three answer boxes and I don't want that... Thanks! {{User:Bye Guy/Sig}} 22:00, February 23, 2020 (EST)

Many IPs have been straight-up vandals. They change PNG and JPG images to weird names (e.g. <nowiki>[[File:Mario.png]] to [[File:Mari.png]]</nowiki>), add content containing bad words, and even just changing pages in general? Is there an option to require all contributors to log in like Bulbapedia and formerly WiKirby? That would add an extra layer of defense to our wiki.

:IP's = more edits. More bad edits, but also more good edits. So revert the bad ones and keep the good ones. Now you have more good edits overall. Better for the health of the wiki. == Yoshi tables ==
In step with the already-existent [[MediaWiki:Common.css|CSS]] for Donkey Kong tables, can you add a green table CSS to be used in articles related to the Yoshi franchise? I would currently like to incorporate the enemy lists on ''Yoshi's New Island'' level pages in such tables, and further apply this standard to other Yoshi pages. Thank you in advance. {{User:Bye Guy/Sig}} 13:15, May 8, 2020 (EDT)
:The DK table coloring is a special case since it was brought over from DK Wiki, but honestly I don't really love getting super colorful with everything. I'd say make a proposal to see if people want to add more table colors. Plain tables could certainly be used in the meantime. --{{User:Porplemontage/sig}} 13:40, May 8, 2020 (EDT)

==I can’t use my iPad==
Right now, I can’t access the Super Mario Wiki at all on my iPad. However, on the Kingdom Hearts Wiki, which I know you also own, I can still access every page besides the recent changes page. Both wikis still work fine on my phone, although editing is really uncomfortable on my phone. I’m hoping there is something you can do about this soon. {{User:Keyblade Master/sig}}
:Little update, the entire wiki only seems to not work if I am logged in, logged out only the recent changes page doesn't work, and yes I was logged out on the Kingdom Hearts Wiki when I looked at it earlier. I am making this edit while logged out on my iPad, but thought I should let you know. {{User:Keyblade Master/sig}}

== What Links Here page not syncing up with page caches correctly ==
Okay, so I'm having issues with [[Special:WhatLinksHere]], in that it now practically never responds to page caches being purged. This has happened to me twice already, where I moved [[Big Koopa Paratroopa]] and [[Star Gem]]; though I changed the links on the respective navtemplates, the links from the transclusions of [[Template:P&DSMBE]] still show even after an hour has passed (which is when I would assume most caches would be purged), and the only way to make the links on the WhatLinksHere list disappear is to manually purge them one by one. I'm pretty sure this is a technical issue, but I do want to know on the off-chance that I move another page soon. {{User:Archivist Toadette/sig}} 23:26, November 14, 2020 (EST)
:The wiki makes these updates relatively slowly so they are spread out and there's no burst of processing all at once. An update of 700+ links will take a while, but it will process eventually, you don't have to manually purge. --{{User:Porplemontage/sig}} 00:38, November 15, 2020 (EST)

::It didn't work as intended, I'm afraid. Does it take a while for the settings to actually take effect? {{User:Archivist Toadette/sig}} 13:48, January 18, 2021 (EST)

::::Alright, I guess that I should reiterate my question then. Is there any backup or alternative that you know of that changes search functionality in my preferences that strictly limits searching in the search box to alphabetical order? {{User:Archivist Toadette/sig}} 16:17, January 18, 2021 (EST)
:::::The suggestions are now generated and sorted based on page quality and relevancy, while being able to correct for small typos. To make the behavior closer to how it was, set search completion to "Classic prefix search" in the preferences Search tab. == Some edits don't update when logged out ==
I noticed the last couple of times I've made edits, they don't show up when I log out of my account. It doesn't just happen to my edits either, as I've seen other people's edits not updating when I'm logged out and it seems to happen to random edits. I've noticed this issue a few days ago and it's pretty annoying because I keep thinking people have reverted my edits when that's not the case. Do you have any solution to this? {{User:LuigiMaster123/sig}} 21:55, March 6, 2021 (EST)

== Category:Places >>> Category:Locations ==
Hello, Porplemontage.
If you've seen the proposals lately, you'll know that one of my proposals recently passed. We've decided to change every instance of Category:Places to Category:Locations, as it sounds more formal as well as for consistency in general.
'''Example:''' Category:Luigi's Mansion Places >>> Category:Luigi's Mansion Locations
We were wondering if you could run a bot to automatically change the category links once they're moved. I can update you once I've done some of this. Thanks.
{{User:The Mansion/sig}} 15:03, April 15, 2021 (EDT)
:Hi. I will do the moves and replacements, but here's the thing. Your proposal is based on a flawed premise, since you state that "way more categories are referred to as locations rather than places, and [this] would be easier and more efficient to enact." This is wrong, 48 categories use Places while only 13 use Locations. So for the sake of consistency across all categories and '''Category:Places''', '''List of places''', and the least strain on the server, I am going to move the the relatively few Locations categories to Places. --{{User:Porplemontage/sig}} 15:56, April 15, 2021 (EDT)
== Lengthy Media ==
Hey Steve! Long time, no see. I hope you are well.
I have been working on reducing the length of media files found in the articles of [[:Category:Articles with audio files over 30 seconds|that category you made]]. I noticed that some pages aren't showing up in it though, despite having media files over 30 seconds. I wasn't sure if there was a reason for that? [[Inside the Castle Walls#Mario Tennis Open|This page has at least one file in a media table]] that is over 30 seconds (over 4 minutes). I've also noticed some other pages not showing up in the category when they have the media file directly linked/embedded — [[Piranha Plant Slide]]'s infobox comes to mind, it was originally not in the category even before the length of its file was reduced. (I can try to find a better example or link to some >30s files on a test page if that would help, since the media files on that page are shorter now.)
Dunno if it's even anything that warrants attention, but I wanted to bring it up to you since you'd already put so much work into making pages/files like that more easily identifiable. Thanks for reading! {{User:Stooben Rooben/sig}} 13:56, May 19, 2021 (EDT)
:Hey, I hope you're well too! That category is limited since it's solely based off the user-entered values for the
length
parameters of the {{tem|media table}} template. If the template isn't used or the parameter is missing for a file, that article won't be added to the category. Unfortunately I don't know of an easy way to just grab the length values directly from the files and use them for categorization, but I figured this was better than nothing for at least a place to start. Thanks for helping out! --{{User:Porplemontage/sig}} 14:27, May 19, 2021 (EDT)
::That makes a lot of sense. I saw that the category mentioned the
length
parameter may need to be updated, but didn't realize that the category itself was tied to it. Cool stuff! And no worries, it is definitely a huge help and a great start for reducing the file lengths. After the category is cleared, I'll probably just hit up [[:Category:Media by game|media by game]] or [[:Category:Media files to be reuploaded with higher quality|quality requested]] to find the stragglers. I really appreciate the clarification. Thanks for all you do, man. {{User:Stooben Rooben/sig}} 14:51, May 19, 2021 (EDT)
== YouTube images guideline ==
[[MarioWiki:Proposals/Archive 56#Allow/create categories for images and media by website|As per proposal]], a while ago I created a category for [[:Category:YouTube Images|YouTube-related pictures]]. In it, I added a brief guideline for what seemed reasonable to add to and exclude from that category—for instance, the guideline doesn’t allow screenshots of all uploads portraying random gameplay or animated show footage unless it’s specially designed by the creator to be shown on YouTube. I would appreciate if you could tweak the guideline to your own liking, thus giving some form of proprietor endorsement. {{User:Koopa con Carne/Sig}} 07:55, May 28, 2021 (EDT)
:Hi there, I don't need to sign off on everything, but I appreciate the thought and nothing sticks out that I would change. Nice job on the categories! --{{User:Porplemontage/sig}} 01:35, May 30, 2021 (EDT)
== Ban-evading anon ==
For a few months now, the staff members have had to block so many IP addresses for evading bans and making edits in names in other languages sections without leaving spaces after commas. Is there anything you can do to stop this from continuing? {{User:Keyblade Master/sig}} 09:21, June 1, 2021 (EDT)
:Sure, I've added an error message if an anon adds any commas to an article without succeeding spaces. Let's see what happens. --{{User:Porplemontage/sig}} 12:25, June 1, 2021 (EDT)
Can you do this to force English quotation marks "..." around Korean words, or if that's not possible, force spaces around Asian quotation marks「...」? The anon's ignoring messages again (and tbh I'm doubting it's even a real person, the behaviour seems very bot-like). {{User:Mario jc/sig}} 21:54, March 24, 2022 (EDT)
:Ok, I've added something to help enforce proper quotation marks for Korean ("") and Japanese (「」) phrases. --{{User:Porplemontage/sig}} 02:00, March 25, 2022 (EDT)

Hello! == Refs without references ==
When a page contains
<ref>...</ref>
but no
<references/>
, the ref text will be silently placed at the end of the article, without a header and possibly following any navigation templates. When some users aren't getting that info, it's an inconsistent experience. Live preview is a "nice to have" feature that's not exactly critical; if there's an issue with it, it's likely to be the one on the chopping block. The warnings are there for a reason, and we want to rest assured that they are making it to 100% of users. We can't expect users to follow warning that aren't being shown to them. == ''Mario Kart'' course names ==
Yep, I think it's time we revisit this. Since the newly announced [[Booster Course Pass]] clunkily uses "Tour" as an abbreviation for courses debuting in ''Mario Kart Tour'', I think we should completely do away with console abbreviations in the titles for said articles, while merely acknowledging that the games use console abbreviations for [[classic course]]s. Plus, ''Mario Kart Tour'' is still in service, and probably still will be by the time the first two Booster Course Pass cups drop.
So what I'm saying is, is it okay with you if I start a multi-option proposal for ''Mario Kart'' course naming conventions? I would suggest every naming convention we've cycled through over time, as well as my preferred option first and foremost. {{User:Archivist Toadette/sig}} 22:48, February 9, 2022 (EST)
:Take a look at [https://i.imgur.com/t25emOI.png this]: Console abbreviations are alive and well when it comes to the older console courses. I love that those line up with exactly what we have, and it makes our pages super discoverable for players searching what they see in-game (with no old game identifiers needed for repeated course titles - games they may have never even played [using a game identifier for content that appears across multiple games is not ideal]). So that system continues to deliver for us; there's no way we're moving all those again.
:Regarding Tour: I agree, both Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Mario Kart Tour are currently "live games" (and oddly, Tour was released more recently). Based on that, we have two options here: 1) Continue to prioritize Tour's normal course titles over the classic titles, not moving any Tour courses to a "Tour" prefix until Mario Kart Tour is basically abandoned or unplayable (and when the Tour service does shut down, it's likely that the only way any of those courses will be playable at all is with a [https://i.imgur.com/IERykTC.png clunky prefix] attached, so it might not seem so weird then). Or 2) Just moving Tour courses to the "Tour" prefix right away based on the fact that this DLC is the newer release and latest iteration of those courses. I think that both of these options are perfectly acceptable, and if the community feels more strongly about one over the other then that's what we should do.
:I really don't see this DLC as cause for another grand reshuffling of those pages; if there was some more radical change to the convention then I'd be open to it. I hope you understand --{{User:Porplemontage/sig}} 08:33, February 10, 2022 (EST)
::While I do still understand your cause for concern, is it still okay if I suggest my preferred options with your your suggested additions thrown in? I just think only a portion of our readers follow your theorized sense of logic, though that's probably just me. {{User:Archivist Toadette/sig}} 10:19, February 10, 2022 (EST)
:::No, because the existing classic titles are perfect where they are. The only thing we have to determine is if we should move the Mario Kart Tour courses as the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC releases or after Mario Kart Tour leaves service. --{{User:Porplemontage/sig}} 10:40, February 10, 2022 (EST)
::::Just a heads-up, I searched up a few ''Mario Kart'' tracks with and without the console abbreviations. There were ''far'' less results with the console abbreviations than there were without. This even applies to Kalimari Desert 2, which had the abbreviation upon being introduced.
::::And, with all due respect, I don't think "perfect" is a good descriptor for the status quo at all. I think we should at least try soliciting discussion on the options I've suggested, and if they're not supported by a majority of users, then that's fine. {{User:Archivist Toadette/sig}} 12:34, February 10, 2022 (EST)
:::::What is your ideal system? Is it normal names ("Wario Shipyard") and game identifiers where needed like "Rainbow Road (Mario Kart 7)"? --{{User:Porplemontage/sig}} 12:45, February 10, 2022 (EST)
::::::More or less, yeah. Though, of course, console abbreviation titles would be used as redirects. {{User:Archivist Toadette/sig}} 12:53, February 10, 2022 (EST)
The only thing is, we can't use the first game names as the identifiers.
*'''The courses have appeared in more than one game'''. When a subject has appeared in more than one game, we use something else for the identifier. It's not acceptable to use a game name for something that has appeared in multiple games because it implies that if you're playing a different game, that's not the thing you're looking for.
**If you are looking for "3DS Rainbow Road" that you read while playing Mario Kart Tour, and you search that and see "3DS Rainbow Road" in the Google results, you know you're in business. "Rainbow Road (Mario Kart 7)" is misleading since you're not currently playing Mario Kart 7, you're playing Mario Kart Tour, and game names should only be used when something appears in one game.
***So it should use some other identifier. In an identifier system, "(3DS)" is an option since it directly incorporates a piece of info that the player sees in-game, which is why we used to do that. That was the compromise, but it brought a bunch of inconsistencies and a weird thing of guessing the identifier for the current game.
Going full retro solves those issues while incorporating the prefix commonly used by Nintendo in and outside of the games. And it has us using the latest iteration of each name. It's sort of like a pre-identifier, it doesn't have to be taken literally as part of the title, but it's there and it's helpful (part of why it's small).
So as you continue to think about your ideal system, you need to address that. Can't use old game names for subjects that appear in multiple games. Ideally, the system would incorporate the console abbreviation in some way as well, since that's what Nintendo themselves use as their own "identifiers." Using ''just'' the console abbreviation as an identifier makes it misleading for the [[Donut Plains 1]] level versus the "Donut Plains 1 (SNES)" course, but putting the prefix first like how they appear in game makes them more of a unique title than at the end, so there is no parenthesis identifier needed. Having to use a console identifier versus a non-course was strange. But [[SNES Donut Plains 1]] has appeared in multiple Kart games, so we can't do "Donut Plains 1 (Super Mario Kart)" either. Same with like [[DS Luigi's Mansion]], we can't do "Luigi's Mansion (Mario Kart DS)" since it appears in multiple games, and "Luigi's Mansion (DS)" is a little weird since it implies it's like a DS game, but [[DS Luigi's Mansion]] just works while matching its modern usage in the latest games. Luckily, a lot of things sort of fall into place with the retro prefixes, since they all have unique article titles.
Regarding your search results thing: That's because adding the prefix makes the search more specific, so it narrows down the results when you add the prefix. But number of results is not even the metric that I'm talking about here, what matters is the number of people searching each term, and more specifically what terms are on their mind for the titles that would need identifiers (e.g. Rainbow Road). Because for a course with a unique name, they are going to find that regardless (so you could make a case to only use retro prefixes where an identifier would otherwise be needed [which is basically what we used to do except we used console abbreviation identifiers when needed], but as we learned that has its own issues, it would make things wildly inconsistent, and we don't base everything 100% militantly on search, but it is a part of the equation). But when users are inserting their own "identifiers" in the search box, they are [https://i.imgur.com/TwWoMqu.png more] [https://i.imgur.com/foW0CO4.png often] [https://i.imgur.com/v5l2Dar.png inserting] a console abbreviation than an old game name. Console abbreviations are what's on their mind, and that's what they're scanning for as they read the results, so those are what should be incorporated into any system. I predict that the older these original games get, the less and less they'll come up in search queries, since a lot of people will simply know them as "SNES whatever" (cementing them as the common name).
So it's only a question of moving the Tour courses as the DLC drops or after Tour support ends. I guess the default based on current policy would be to move them on release, but if we want to delay Tour course moves while both games are in service, that could be a proposal. --{{User:Porplemontage/sig}} 14:33, February 10, 2022 (EST)
:Regarding the "more-than-one-game" argument, there's also the [[Warp Space (Mario Party 4)|Warp Space]]s from ''[[Mario Party 4]]''; despite also appearing in ''[[Mario Party: Island Tour]]'', they still need a game identifier because there's the [[Warp Space (Mario Party 10)|Warp Space]]s from ''[[Mario Party 10]]''. Also, we can switch to type identifiers for things like [[DS Luigi's Mansion|Luigi's Mansion]] or [[SNES Donut Plains 1|Donut Plains 1]], specifically "race course" or "battle course". Tell you what, how about I draft this up extensively and then contact you once I'm done? {{User:Archivist Toadette/sig}} 16:04, February 10, 2022 (EST)
::Using game identifiers for more than one game is bad and discouraged for the reasons I laid out. Yes, there are cases where it happens. If possible, a better identifier should be used. If not, then it's a one-off less-than-ideal scenario. When something is bad, pointing out that the bad thing happens in other areas of the wiki does not make that thing good, and it's certainly not an argument for implementing the bad thing on a more pronounced scale wiki-wide. And using those identifiers for Luigi's Mansion and Donut Plains 1, you lose the console abbreviation, which is a [https://i.imgur.com/nJSErd1.png huge boon] to the way folks are commonly thinking about these course titles. Ok, if you can present me with your full presentation, I may have a counter/some ideas. --{{User:Porplemontage/sig}} 18:00, February 10, 2022 (EST)
== Recent ban due to CappyThrow Account ==
Hello,
I sent an email about this ban a few weeks ago and have not been responded too. I contacted Mario jc, the person who dealt the ban and also have not been responded too.
Some years ago my older sibling created an account here. He has completely left the house at this point. When I tried to create an account, I was blocked saying that I was a double account of CappyThrow. I am not him. Nobody seems to be responding and I was hoping you might. Everyone is just ignoring me.
Mario jc also blocked CappyThrow saying that he used offensive language over email - right after I sent my email. Considering everyone thinks I am him, I am concerned I may have gotten him in trouble. I assure you, my email was not intended to be offensive if this is my fault. Here is the contents of the email:
Hello,
''I am sorry but I believe we have entered a misunderstanding. CappyCapture is not me but my sibling. To be quite honest, the person behind CappyCapture has moved out entirely. I completely understand where the ban came from and have no hard feelings, as I see how easy and obvious of a mistake this is to make. Especially with how rude he was - I didn't realize until I was fumbling around for a contact address and spotted his comments on Mario JC's page. However I and CappyCapture are not one. I request unbannishment? It would be much appreciated. Sincerest apologies for the mixup.
CaptainCappy''
So as you can see, I don't believe I was actually offensive in this. I am very confused right now and appear to be being ignored.
Please help out,
CaptainCappy
