Black on black-background arcade sprites like this is always achieved through transparency onto the background to work while staying within palette limitations. Many NES sprites do this too, like literally every boss in SMB3. MB arcade doesn't have a non-transparent black value in a palette on the sprite layer at all, so it's definitely someone trying to "fix" it. (Note how in the TCRF image, black is used as the transparency of the entire tile, meaning all of that black is transparency.) :It looks like MB arcade might ignore the rule sometimes (like for Shellcreepers and the brothers, though Luigi's shirt isn't "true" black), so I've changed it back for now. Things like mad Sidestepper pupils and Freezie mouths are transparency, though, and all home conversions use the transparency trick consistently. I've left a question on the TSR sheet to ensure it's legitimate. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 10:21, July 24, 2022 (EDT)

:OK, the black on the sheet is legit, though this also means the pupils on mad Sidestepper are transparent. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 22:46, July 28, 2022 (EDT)
