In ''Super Mario Bros. 3'', they replace regular Hammer Bros. on the [[Giant Land]] map screen. Since they're so large and throw hammers much farther than normal, Mario can stand next to them and not be harmed. Just remember to be in the air by the time a Sledge Brother lands or else you'll be paralyzed. They also break any blocks that are under them. They may be an older version of a Hammer Bro. or a mutated version of it like all of the creatures in Giant Land. Its reappearance in ''New Super Mario Bros.'' questions this theory, though, as he appears in World 8 along with [[Fire Bros.]] It should be noted, however, that the official New Super Mario Bros. strategy guide calls them Sumo Bros. It is unknown if this is a mistake (Since [[Sumo Bros.]] are enemies in Super Mario World) or if they are in fact called Sumo Bros. now.

In Yoshi's Safari, a Sledge Bro. would occasionally appear as a sub-boss. It jumps around throwing hammers, and causes the ground to shake with its landing.

Sledge Brothers., or simply Sledge Bros. are large, green versions of Hammer Brothers who wear black armor and throw sledge hammers.

Sledge Bros. first appeared in Super Mario Bros. 3 in Giant Land, were they replaced Hammer Bros. in the area's levels and map. If a Sledge Bro. sees Mario, it will try to attack him by throwing sledge hammers at him; additionally, whenever a ledge Bro. jumps and lands on the ground, it creates a miniature earthquake which can paralyze Mario.
