In Super Mario Galaxy, the Luma [[Black Hole|sacrifices]] itself to save the universe, but in Super Mario Galaxy 2 it is alive. Is this Luma the same one as the one in SMG because Mario can no longer spin to attract coins underwater in the sequel. {{User:Fawful's Minion/sig}} 21:22, 1 July 2016 (EDT) | In Super Mario Galaxy, the Luma [[Black Hole|sacrifices]] itself to save the universe, but in Super Mario Galaxy 2 it is alive. The answer to this question is in the paragraph after the following.
This is my theory: The Luma in Rosalina's storybook (the beacon luma) and Mario's luma (baby Luma) are two completely different lumas. The luma in Rosalina's storybook turned into the beacon that powers the comet observatory. On MarioWiki's Luma page, the text suggests that the reborn Luma somehow left the beacon and became a luma again. Meaning he is the same luma that acompanies Mario in SMG and SMG2. Also that the beacon is still on the comet observatory. That puzzled me so I did a little research of my own. First, I realized that if they were one in the same, why would they call him 'Baby Luma' if by now that luma would for sure have gained quite some age. Second, the obvious fact that it is not possible that the beacon is still there if Luma is once again a luma. Third, if Luma became a luma again, then why doesn't Rosalina seem grateful or make any grateful comments since Luma came back to the Gateway Galaxy with Mario after Bowser's attack? That luma would obviously have at least some importance to Rosalina. After thinking long and hard, I found in MarioWiki's Luma page (species) this sentence: "While he is the only cream-colored Luma encountered by Mario, the Luma that transformed into the beacon that powers the comet observatory is shown to be the same color in Rosalina's storybook's illustration." implying that they aren't the same Luma. It all made sense to me. So this is what happened: Luma turns into the beacon so that Rosalina can travel to her home every 100 years. Centuries later when Rosalina returns to the Mushroom Kingdom, Bowser attacks the comet observatory and the power stars used to power the beacon are taken by Bowser to make him bigger. Many lumas fall to the Mushroom Kingdom including Baby Luma, who is simply the youngest luma of the bunch, discovered by princess Peach before the attack. Mario is invited to tea with the princess to show her discovery. On the way to the castle Bowser attacks and takes the castle and Peach to the center of the universe. In space, Mario gets blown off the castles' bridge by Kamek and falls on the Gateway Galaxy. Before Peach goes off-screen, she sends Baby Luma to check on Mario. Luma finds him on Gateway Galaxy, wakes him up, plays hide and seek with him, and then summons Rosalina to come to the galaxy to introduce him to her. Rosalina thinks he is worthy to help out and tells Baby Luma to join him on his quest. Luma then decides to reside in Mario's hat granting him the power to spin.
As for the luma in SMG being the same luma in SMG2, I think they are one in the same. When Rosalina encounters Mario in the end of the game in the vortex, she explains that the cycle of life will continue, meaning that everything will be reborn. Therefore the Baby Luma was also reborn. After the credits, Rosalina thanks the player and leaves. Then Baby Luma is seen leaving the Gateway Galaxy. In SMG2, when Mario finds Baby Luma in the bushes, even though Mario doesn't recognize him, and even though Baby Luma doesn't quite know where he is, he still recognizes Mario and reacts by flying into Mario's hat and again granting him the power to spin. Also, in MarioWiki's Luma page (species), it says that the Baby Luma is the only cream-colored luma other than Rosalina's backstory luma. And since everything was reborn, and there are (or at least shouldn't at the time) no new galaxies or anything, it would be safe to assume that Baby Luma made his comeback in SMG2. Since this Luma has a few unique names (Apricot Luma, Baby Luma and Little Luma), I think this article should be moved to one of those. I'd go for "Baby Luma" myself.
