Hammer Brothers were one of the many recurring ''Super Mario'' enemies introduced in ''[[Super Mario Bros.]]'' More often than not, they are encountered in pairs, hindering the player's progress by tossing claw hammers and jumping up and down one or two rows of [[Brick Block]]s and the ground. While the player can avoid them by running past them while they are jumping, defeating them by any means of attack ([[jump]]s, hitting the block they are standing on from below, [[Shell Toss|kicked shells]], [[fireball]]s, or touching them while rendered invincible by a [[Super Star|Starman]]) would grant the player 1000 points. If a Hammer Brother is onscreen for a certain amount of time without being defeated, it starts to chase after the player.

A total of 20 Hammer Brothers appear in the game: a pair in [[World 3-1 (Super Mario Bros.)|World 3-1]], two pairs in [[World 5-2 (Super Mario Bros.)|World 5-2]], two pairs in [[World 7-1 (Super Mario Bros.)|World 7-1]], one in [[World 7-4 (Super Mario Bros.)|World 7-4]] that is [[Fake Bowser|disguised as Bowser]], eight in [[World 8-3 (Super Mario Bros.)|World 8-3]], and one in [[World 8-4 (Super Mario Bros.)|World 8-4]] before the true [[Bowser]].

In the ''[[Super Mario All-Stars|All-Stars]]'' version of the game, their hammers make a whistling sound whenever they are thrown, are slightly slower, and fly on a larger curve compared to the original, making them easier for the plumbers to pass through. In all versions of ''Super Mario Bros.'', regardless of what direction the Hammer Brothers face and attack, their hammers would always have the claw side face left, and the hammers would always rotate counterclockwise.

Hammer Brothers, redesigned with more prominently-yellow skin, black helmets, and black [[Buzzy Beetle]]-like shells, act the same in ''[[Super Mario Bros. 3]]'', though they hurl mallets as opposed to the claw hammers they wielded in previous appearances (a mere aesthetic difference), they no longer chase after the player after some time, and only defeating them with a [[stomp]] would yield 1000 points, as defeating them with any other attack (hitting the block below them, [[Shell Toss|thrown shells]], [[fireball]]s, tail swipes from [[Raccoon Mario|Raccoon]] or [[Tanooki Mario]], hammers from [[Hammer Mario]], and contact with players made invincible by a [[Super Star|Starman]]) gives out only 100 points by default, unless the enemy was not one of the first to be defeated by the thrown shell.

In this game, three new species of Hammer Brothers appear: [[Boomerang Bro]]thers, semi-common green-skinned (light blue in artillery levels in the original version) variants the throw boomerangs that can return to them; [[Fire Bro]]thers, rare, red-skinned variants which spit bouncing fireballs like those of [[Fire Mario]]; and [[Sledge Bro]]thers, huge, green-skinned versions of standard Hammer Brothers that can immobilize the player by causing earthquakes whenever they land after a jump. Unlike Hammer Brothers, however, none of these new variants are capable of jumping between rows of [[Brick Blocks|bricks]] and the ground, a skill that remained unique to the main species in most (but not all) of their future appearances.

A total of 19 Hammer Brothers appear in the game, though they are never seen in any actual level except for the first [[World 8-Hand Traps|Hand Trap]] (which features all Hammer Brother species). Instead, they and their variants [[Enemy Course|patrol]] the map screen of every world except [[Pipe Land]] and [[Dark Land]] (which instead have Piranha Plant and Hand-Trap levels, respectively, that serve a similar purpose); touching one there results in a battle with them. Whenever a certain set of conditions are met, one of the patrolling Hammer Brothers on the map is replaced by a [[Treasure Ship]], a coin-filled airship with no enemies except for a pair of Boomerang Brothers faced at the end of the level.

In the original ''Super Mario Bros. 3'', regardless of what type of Hammer Brother it represents, the enemy's icon on the map would always be that of a Hammer Brother. This was changed in ''[[Super Mario All-Stars]]'', where the map icons in Desert Land were changed to reflect a Boomerang Brother and a Fire Brother, and the icons in [[Giant Land]] were replaced by green Hammer Brothers, since Sledge Brothers are green in all versions of ''Super Mario Bros. 3''. A further change was made in ''[[Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3]]'', where the map icons in Giant Land were made to properly resemble Sledge Brothers.

Besides the enemy Hammer Brothers, it was [[List of Super Mario Bros. 3 pre-release and unused content|originally intended]] that there be a Hammer Brother that hosted a Dice game. This was implemented as late as testing, but was eventually cut.

The game also introduces a power-up, the [[Hammer Suit]]. This power-up gives Mario or Luigi the ability to throw hammers like a Hammer Brother, taking out stronger enemies like [[Boo]]s, [[Dry Bones]], and even [[Thwomp]]s. They are also invulnerable to fireballs while crouching.

In the [[Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3|Game Boy Advance version]], three more Hammer Brothers appear in [[World-e]]. Their hammers, now in the form of claw hammers once again as opposed to mallets, are one of the few hazards that can damage [[Shell Mario]] even when crouched.

As with ''[[Super Mario Bros. 3]]'', only one pair appears in one regular stage, jumping up and down two rows of blocks under and over the third [[Star Coin]] of [[World 2-4 (New Super Mario Bros.)|World 2-4]]. Starting in [[World 5 (New Super Mario Bros.)|World 5]], however, Hammer Bros. begin appearing on the map in a method similar to ''Super Mario Bros. 3''. In this game, they are much larger than in previous games. They attack by throwing two hammers aimed at Mario, before leaping elsewhere and repeating. As in ''New Super Mario Bros. Wii'', Yoshi can eat the Hammer Bros.' hammers and spit them out as weapons. Mario can defeat a Hammer Bro by [[Star Spin|spinning]] or jumping on him. The Hammer Bro is knocked on its shell as a result, which leaves him vulnerable to the next attack; Mario can walk into him or jump on him to defeat him. Mario can [[capture]] a Hammer Bro by first removing their headwear with [[Cappy]], and then throwing Cappy at them a second time. As a Hammer Bro, Mario can use their weapons as an attack (as in his [[Hammer Mario|Hammer form]]) which can also hit [[? Block]]s, and in the Luncheon Kingdom, the frying pans can destroy blocks of cheese to reveal items hidden underneath. Although no Hammer Brothers appear amongst Bowser's invasion force at the beginning of the ''Super Mario'' anime film ''[[Super Mario Bros.: Peach-hime Kyūshutsu Dai Sakusen!]]'', an individual one does appear later. This Hammer Brother (which, depending on the selected scene, is inconsistently depicted as both rather large and completely to-scale) is assigned to guard a cave where a recurring pair of [[Goomba]]s trap Mario, Luigi, and [[Haru-ōji|Kibidango]]. However, Luigi (who was searching for [[coin]]s at the time) digs an escape tunnel, and they escape from the Hammer Bro without being caught. In a last-ditch attempt to retrieve the prisoners, the Hammer Bro throws hammers at a cliff that Mario, Luigi, and Kibidango are trekking across, and causes the top of the cliff that Kibidango and Mario are on to fall, smashing the area that the Hammer Bro is on and burying him beneath several rocks.

Robed, book-carrying Hammer Brothers are later seen acting as singers during Bowser and Peach's wedding towards the end of the film, and another Hammer Brother is seen applying makeup to Princess Peach for the said event.

Two Hammer Brothers appear in "[[Oh, Brother!]]" After Kooky pulls Mario back through the pipe with the [[Plumber Pole]] through the Pipe World and into the dungeon, the pair of Hammer Brothers appear and apprehend Mario.

Hammer Bros. make minor appearances in ''[[Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga]]'', which (for the most part) takes place in the [[Beanbean Kingdom]]. On their way to the Beanbean Kingdom, Mario and Luigi encounter the [[Border Bro]]s. (Hammer Bros. that act as border patrol between the kingdoms).

When Mario and Luigi reach Bowser's Castle, they encounter enemy Hammer Bros. that (like the rest of the [[Koopa Troop]]) had been duped by [[Bowletta]] into defending the castle. Hammer Bros. themselves only appear in battle alongside [[Gunner Guy]]s and [[Boo]]s. The original version of the game gives them a somewhat nonstandard appearance; they have white pupil-less eyes, their shoes are missing, and they appear more hunched over and slightly portly, though not to the level of a Sledge Bro. They attack by throwing their hammers at the Mario Bros. in a way nearly identical to [[Rookie]]'s hammer throw, albeit a bit faster; as with that attack, if the Hammer Bro jumps before throwing, it aims at Luigi, but if it does not, it targets Mario. The Mario Bros. must deflect the hammers with their own. Once a Hammer Bro loses half of its HP, it starts throwing two hammers per attack. They are healed by fire, but weak to thunder.

In [[Gwarhar Lagoon]], a type of Boomerang Bro appears (renamed [[Beanerang Bro]] in ''[[Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions]]''). This game also introduces the [[Yo Bro]], the [[Limbo Bro]] and their [[Elite Limbo Bro|Elite]] counterparts, and the [[Chomp Bro]].

In ''[[Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions]]'', Hammer Bros. reappear as enemies in the main story, having their standard design, unlike [[Dry Bones]] and [[Spiny|Spinies]], which use designs invoking the off-model designs from the original. They also appear as enemies and allies in the ''Minion Quest: The Search for Bowser'' mode. They first appear in the level "[[For the Love of Hammers]]", where they are found teaming up with the [[Hammerhead Bros.]] They fight [[Captain Goomba (Mario & Luigi series)|Captain Goomba]]'s squad to decide if they are going to join the squad or stay with the Hammerhead Bros. They tell the Hammerheads that they believe that they can push their hammer crafting to the limits by creating the [[Ultra Hammer]], which the Hammerhead Bros. give to Mario and Luigi before Joke's End. Hammer Bros. are Ranged troopers and attack by throwing their hammers. While mind-controlled, the Hammer Bros. introduce themselves as the '''L33T HAMM3R BROZ.''', and speak in the Internet "language" known as "[[Wikipedia:Leet|1337-speak]]" (pronounced "leet speak"), as well as with capital letters. In the Japanese version, they speak completely in [[Wikipedia:Katakana|katakana]], as opposed to [[Wikipedia:Hiragana|hiragana]],<ref name=Japanese>[http://themushroomkingdom.net/mlpit_j2e.shtml Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time from Japanese to English] ''TMK''. When [[Mario]], [[Luigi]], [[Baby Mario]], and [[Baby Luigi]] arrive in the Vim Factory, they are instantly confronted by the "L33T HAMM3R BROZ." After Mario and Luigi are captured by the factory's automated defenses, Baby Mario and Baby Luigi are forced to battle the Hammer Bros. In battle, the Hammer Bros. have 100 [[Heart Point|HP]] (90 in non-American versions) and attack by using the [[Knockback Bros.]] technique, a move from ''[[Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga]]''. Using his hammer, one Hammer Bro smashes the other into a ball, then hits him into either Baby Mario or Baby Luigi. To avoid the attack, the babies have to jump over the ball Hammer Bro as he approaches. Sometimes, the Hammer Bro's hammer breaks, sending the ball bouncing towards a baby. In this case, the baby brother should not [[jump]], as the balled brother simply bounces over the baby's head.

After one Hammer Bro is defeated (or if one of the Hammer Bros is unable to attack), the other one is forced to fight by himself. To attack, the sole Hammer Bro tosses spinning hammers that roll on the ground. To defend against this attack, the Baby Mario Bros. have to jump over the hammers as they approach. To determine which baby he is aiming for, the player needs to watch what he does before throwing. If he hops, he throws it at Baby Mario, and if he rolls his eyes around, he throws it at Baby Luigi. Ultimately, Baby Mario and Baby Luigi have to work together and defeat the second Hammer Bro. Unlike most bosses in ''Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time'', they use the same defeat animation of a normal enemy; the same thing happens with [[Junior Shrooboid]], the [[Shroob]]s, and [[Kamek]]. Also, in the [[Nintendo Power|Player's Guide]], the word "boss" is missing from the stat box.

After defeating the Hammer Bros., the Baby Mario Bros. destroy their mind-control helmets, thus returning the Hammer Bros. to their normal state. Free from Shroob influence, the Hammer Bros. begin to speak normally again (and even comment on the strange manner of speaking they were just using). Grateful for being released, the Hammer Bros. give the babies [[hammer]]s, and teach them how to use the hammer and [[Baby Drill]].

When the babies go into the vents and encounter a [[Spiny Shroopa]], the Hammer Bros. teach them how to use the hammers in battle. Later, when the babies rescue Mario and Luigi, the Hammer Bros. return and show how to use the hammer while piggybacking in battle.

Hammer Bros also appear as offensive teammates in ''[[Mario Strikers Charged]]''. Here, they are very good at shooting and passing the ball, but are unable to tackle very well. Hammer Bro is also very slow in this game, possibly because he carries several hammers strapped to his back. Every time he shoots or tackles, he uses the hammers from the sling on his back.

Hammer Bro also pulls out these hammers when hitting, faking, and using his skillshot. His [[Deke]] allows him to pull a giant hammer out of nowhere, and smash it on the ground to blast anyone he hits away. Despite not having a large range, it is nonetheless a decent defense as it temporarily paralyzes players that come in contact with it.

His [[Skillshot]] is the [[Hammer Throw (Mario Strikers Charged)|Hammer Throw]], which, once fully charged, causes Hammer Bro to leap into the air and toss hammers at the Kritter, the goalkeeper, nailing him to the ground and thus immobilizing him. This leaves the goal open for a few seconds. Once the Kritter is stuck to the ground, the Hammer Bro smacks the ball in for an easy shot. However, the Hammer Throw has a limited range, meaning that it must be used not too far from the goal to be effective.

They look like Koopa Troopas, but have a taller stature, smaller blue eyes and a lighter-colored muzzle. Hammer Bros are notably always armed with black or gray hammers tied to wooden handles with rope. In ''Super Mario Bros. 3'', Hammer Bros wear black shells and helmets, while their hammers are slightly less detailed. In ''Super Smash Bros. Brawl'', Hammer Bros are given a more realistic appearance than their ''Super Mario'' depiction, having a monotone appearance, as well as highly detailed hammers and helmets. In ''Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS'' / ''Wii U'' and ''Super Smash Bros. Ultimate'', however, Hammer Bros have a vibrant, cartoonish appearance with less detailed hammers and helmets; in the latter, their helmets and shoes have a lighter green color.
