Grates are disc-shaped objects that appear in Super Mario Galaxy 2. They are featured during Flip-Flopping in Flipsville, a mission in Flipsville Galaxy, where they grant a connection between two different surfaces of a platform. Ground-pounding on a grate causes Mario or Luigi to flip to the other side of the platform, changing gravitation and allowing him to walk on that side. Simply falling off the platform does not switch the force of gravitation.

Grates are platforms found in the Wii game Super Mario Galaxy 2. They are only found in the Flipsville Galaxy in the mission Flip-Flopping in Flipsville. They are used to advance throughout the galaxy, Mario (or Luigi) must Ground Pound them and they will flip him to the other side of the planet. These platforms control Mario's gravity in this galaxy and activating one underneath a Pupdozer is the only way to defeat one. Grates play a major role in the battle with Glamdozer. The player needs to flip underneath her with these four times to defeat her. In Flipsville's New Digs, all grates are replaced by dirt patches of which the player must use the Spin Drill to defy gravity instead.

Grates are also helpful in defeating certain enemies. Pounding a grate while a Pupdozer walks over it is the only way to defeat the enemy. Moreover, grates play a major role in the battle with Glamdozer, where the player needs to use them and slam the boss from underneath four times in order to defeat her. However, during battle, Glamdozer often shoots large blobs of lava that can fill in the grates temporarily, rendering them unusable during that period of time. However, Mario or Luigi is unable to use grates if Chomps are on the other side.
In the mission Flipsville's New Digs, all grates are replaced by dirt patches where the player must use the Spin Drill to switch the force of gravitation.
