Like the first two ''Donkey Konga'' titles, ''Donkey Konga 3'' is playable on the [[Nintendo GameCube#DK Bongos|DK Bongos]], but it can also be played on a standard [[Nintendo GameCube#Nintendo GameCube Controller|Nintendo GameCube Controller]]. [[Donkey Kong]], [[Diddy Kong|Diddy]], and [[Dixie Kong|Dixie]] reappear from the previous two titles as playable characters. [[Funky Kong|Funky]] also appears as a new and fourth playable character, specifically by Player 4.

There are 56 songs featured, 35 of which are available from the start and 21 of which are Famicom songs that must be unlocked.
