Contraption Cave introduces three enemies and two game mechanics. The first enemies encounters are Neek, mice who run around on peg boards. Next, Kritters are introduced, being reptilian enemies that can climb or jump across pegs. Finally, Bats are encountered, being aerial enemies that are found near the end of the stage.
The two mechanics introduced are the concept of pulling a lever, done by holding down both "L" and "R" on the lever, and the spinning valves contraption. The vales will move horizontally or vertically on a set path. Their movement is dependent on which way Donkey Kong is spinning when he grasps a valve. There are three areas to this level; The beginning is climbing on pegs with Neek and Kritters nearby, the second area has Neeks and levers that must be pulled to progress, and the final area has Bats and valves.
- The second area has a Bonus Barrel near the exit. The bonus stage has a time limit of 35 seconds to break the barrels in the area. They are rewarded a Crystal Coconut for doing so. Regardless of the outcome of the bonus stage, the Bonus Barrel will disappear upon exiting. "Going bananas", executed by pressing "A" and using twenty bananas, is a good way of finishing the bonus stage, because DK will get a power boost.
