They resemble Japanese paper lanterns and are based on the {{wp|chōchin-obake}}, a paper lantern that comes alive on its one hundredth "birthday" in Japanese mythology. Their attack method involves them sticking out their tongues. They cannot be destroyed, but they can be used as platforms to step on.

Bero has also appeared in volume 8 of ''[[Super Mario-kun]]''. It is seen giving Wario bad food.
